Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom Sustain: the alliance for better food and farming Full time
About Capital Growth

Capital Growth, an initiative of Sustain, is a network of community food gardens aiming to give
more Londoners the opportunity to grow food as part of a healthy, resilient food system for
London. Set up in 2008 to help create over 2,000 new food growing spaces, it has now supported
over 3,500.
We represent and advocate for community food growers at a policy and London-wide
level and provide a platform for innovative ideas and information sharing. We run food growing
activities, provide training, events and networking opportunities, online support, tools and
publications and London-wide engagement days and promotion, working alongside the national Good
to Grow network, which is part of the Sustainable Food Places programme. We are increasingly
working with councils in London to engage them in supporting food growing at a local level.

About the role

This is a leadership role at Sustain focusing on community food growing. The role has two key

aspects:
firstly, overseeing delivery of the current project; and secondly, leadership in
developing and fundraising for the next phase.

The Capital Growth Coordinator will oversee delivery of the current, well-established programme
of work funded by the City Bridge Trust funded aiming to secure nature and climate friendly

gardens for all (with the following key outcomes):
Increased status, protection and resilience of community food gardens in London

Improved networking opportunities, better skills and knowledge in the network and an
increase in climate and nature friendly practices from new and existing gardens

A wider recognition of the biodiversity and climate resilience of community gardens

More opportunities for people from different backgrounds to get involved in community
growing leading to improved health and mental wellbeing

Tasks and responsibilities

Programme management and development - Ensure that Capital Growth plans and
delivers an effective and impactful programme of work, funded by City Bridge Trust, which

includes:

Continue to explore and deliver activities to protect and enhance the status of community
food growing gardens in London, including potential campaigns

Engage London councils, growers networks and gardens to shape and engage in the programme
and support campaigns or initiatives that protect and enhance food growing spaces (e.g. signing
up to our Growing for Change pledge)

Work with the Project Officer to: Plan and run a programme of training, networking events
and engagement, including London-wide Good to Grow and Urban Harvest, engagement with hub/key
gardens, and training partners. Review and deliver a communications plan, including website,
press, social media, newsletters.
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records, prepare reports
to funders and ensure monitoring and evaluation delivered.
Develop online publications and tools
including citizen science tools to record harvest, enhance biodiversity, and indicators of
climate and community resilience.

Build on and develop partnerships to meet objectives, generate match funding, develop new
areas of work and collaboration with related campaigns e.g. Food for the Planet, Right to Grow

Line manage the Capital Growth Project Officer, Capital Growth Community Grower (at the
Royal Parks) and volunteers to assist in delivering the above duties where appropriate and
organise team meetings.

Provide resources and materials that enable gardens to widen participation, support food
gardens to take action to cultivate racial justice and become more inclusive, welcoming spaces
that reflect their local communities.

Strategic and operational food growing network - Ensure that Capital Growth continues to
have a strategic role and recognition in London and beyond and builds and supports a wide

network of gardens, which includes:

Represent Capital Growth strategically in London and advocate for community food gardens
with policy
- and decision-makers, and engage local councils in supporting food growing

Organise quarterly working party meetings, quarterly inter-council network meetings and a
community garden steering group to engage partners

Engage new and existing community food growing spaces in the network and ensure databases
and website are updated

Identify opportunities and barriers to peri-urban farming, and continue to highlight the
benefits of agroecological and culturally appropriate food growing in the fringes of London

Collaborate with other Sustain projects and campaigns e.g. Sustain's Veg Cities campaign
and Good Food for All Londoners report, as well as develop new ideas for related campaigns

Seek opportunity to promote and increase the benefits that growing food has for health,
wellbeing, skills and learning, including opportunities for social prescribing.

Other tasks that may arise from time to time.

Project development and fundraising - Ensure Capital Growth can continue to fundraise for
its activities through demonstrating i
