Waste Operative

Job objectives and responsibilities
- To be responsible for the regular and sufficient day to day removal of general, recycling and clinical waste, sharp bins from departments to the waste compound.
- To ensure all waste streams are segregated, handled, stored and disposed in line with the site and collection contractor requirements.
- To plan the route for removal of all waste streams.
- Assist to identify potential areas of improvement to improve performance.
- To comply with the Health and Safety procedure when moving waste around the site.
Main duties
- To be competent to use equipment required training provided.
- To remove all waste streams from allocated wasteholds regularly and in sufficient intervals.
- To remain vigilant and move build up of waste around the site.
- To ensure all lids on all wheelie bins are fully closed & locked prior to transportation.
- To ensure all clinical waste is correctly segregated into yellow wheelie bins according to the site/contractors requirements prior to collection.
- To ensure all safety devices on yellow wheelie bins are fully engaged in the waste compound.
- To ensure the waste compound and all allocated waste holds are kept clean, tidy and reporting any flytipping to the line manager.
- To make sure all bins in the allocated area are washed on monthly basis. To report any spillage of refuse, issues or concerns to the line manager.
- To check all equipment is in good working order prior to and the end of each shift and report any faulty equipment to the line manager.
- Maintain equipment log of machinery and waste units on site.
- To ensure all personal protective equipment (PPE) is worn at all times.
- To ensure pedestrian walkways are kept clear of obstructions at all times.
- To follow the training provided at all times.
- Ensure all ad hoc requests are completed within agreed timelines.
- Ensure ID is carried at all times.
- Acknowledge and participate in training provided.
- To be familiar with the site Fire (emergency) procedures.
- To carry out any other reasonable management requests to fulfil the requirements of our contract with Hull NHS Trust.
Person Specification
- Understanding of waste procedures and practices
- Good and effective interpersonal skills and the ability to interact at all levels
- Good customer service skills
- Good house keeping ability both personally and for their working environment.
- Flexibility to work various shifts, weekends and adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to work in a team or as an individual
- Ability to work under pressure
- Ability to operate machinery and drive tugs
- Physically fit
- To be vetted to contract requirement, DBS compliant level
Health and Safety responsibilities
- Follow Group and company policies and procedures at all times;
- Report any apparent deficiencies in systems of work or equipment provided that may result in failure of service delivery or risk to health and safety or the vironment;
- Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received;
- Report any issues or training needs to your Line manager and /or via your divisional incident reporting system;
