Memory and Dementia Pathway HMP Staffordshire

This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated band 7 Senior Occupational Therapist to join the existing team working across the West Midland locality prison network.

Older adults in prisons and approved premises are entitled to receive the same access, assessment, and provision of services as if they were a member of the local community. The Prison in-reach team aims to provide screening and assessment of cognition to facilitate and support a dementia diagnosis alongside the care services in the prison settings to ensure support provision needed to maximise their independence.

Applicants should possess the knowledge and skills to enable them to work in the memory and dementia speciality, working with service users affected by all types of dementia. This includes working with challenging and complex needs associated to a dementia diagnosis.

Main duties of the job
  • Delivery of a high standard of nursing care to individuals referred to the Memory & Dementia Service
  • Provide a specialist mental health nursing assessment, care planning and to evaluate those experiencing dementia
  • To work in partnership with fellow team members and internal/external partners.
  • To undertake their own professional development and compliance with mandatory training.

Development and Progression Within Mental Health Services at MPFT - YouTube

Applicants must have previous Older Adult experience with familiarity of the diagnostic process for dementia, knowledge of assessment tools and the delivery of non-pharmacological interventions together with an understanding of the benefit of activity and occupation within the restricted environment of prison. You will also contribute to the education and training of prison staff and healthcare professionals working in the prison as well as peer support workers.

You will be part of the South Staffordshire Memory and Dementia service but working clinically in a designated prison environments (management and clinical supervision will provided via the core Memory & Dementia pathway).

You will be responsible for the delivery of a range of high-level specialist assessments, identifying risks and management plans in the process.

The Memory and Dementia Pathway will provide you with a supportive environment in which to fully utilise and develop your skills and knowledge in working in a designated prison setting as part of a truly holistic system of health and social care.

  • Current professional OT registration
  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent knowledge gained through experience
  • Evidence of recent study/personal development
Experience Essential
  • Experience of working in a clinical setting
  • Experience of prioritising and managing workloads to deadlines
  • Substantial Band 6 OT experience
Desirable
  • Experience and knowledge of service development /Change models.
