We are looking for Tobacco Dependency Treatment Advisors to support the launch the North Lincolnshire & Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) Lung Health Checks Programme, helping patients to quit smoking with ongoing support post Lung Health Check scan as part of our Trust based Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service.


The NHS Long Term Plan has committed to offering all people admitted to hospital who smoke NHS funded tobacco treatment by 2023/24.

It recognises that tobacco dependency is a clinical condition that prematurely kills at least half of people who smoke.

Rather than a lifestyle choice, smoking is an addiction that can be successfully treated, significantly improving patient's morbidity and mortality.

We at NLAG are leading nationally with these developments and want to provide tobacco dependency treatment support to patients accessing the Lung Health Checks service.


The Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service currently provides systematic NHS funded treatment of tobacco addiction for all inpatients, and maternity patients across North Lincolnshire.

The service will increase the support we offer to people accessing our services, to help them to stop smoking or to reduce harm from tobacco (temporary abstinence) and be smoke-free.


With two hubs located at Grimsby Diana Princess of Wales Hospital and Scunthorpe General Hospital will predominantly be based at one, providing local site provision on a 4 day week rota, but with the flexibility to work at the other hub to ensure continuous provision of the service for all inpatients.


Working in a team of advisors, led by the Tobacco Dependency Lead, you will provide specialist behavioural support and nicotine replacement therapy advice to patients who are part of the Lung Health Checks Programme.

It is essential for this role that you will be fully supportive of the Trust's smoke free policy, acting as a smoke free champion as part of your work.

No prior experience of working in smoking cessation or with people with addictions is necessary.

The post holder will form part of the newly established tobacco dependency treatment team for Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Trust.

The team will deliver treatment for tobacco dependency as part of the Trust's commitment to the new Lung Health Check service.

The role will be based within the hospital and community and will deliver tobacco dependency treatment advice and support for all patients identified as being a smoker whilst taking part in the Lung Health Check (lung cancer screening) service.

Care following discharge will be provided alongside that provided on the wards.

Main responsibilities:

  • Organise own workload and work unsupervised in a busy team. Maintain a high standard of work and prioritise own workload according to the needs of the service, individual needs including equality, diversity and social inclusion in all aspects of work.
  • Take referrals, including selfreferrals into the service and work with patients to identify the most appropriate tobacco dependency treatment pathway.
  • Identify and engage with individuals and groups from target areas.
  • Support individuals to make informed choices about their health and wellbeing and support them in initiating and sustaining appropriate behavioural changes to improve their health.
  • Record and report activities and results.
  • Develop and sustain tobacco dependency support and referrals into the service.
  • Travel is required within the designated service location, including occasional regional travel.
  • The tobacco dependency service will operate seven days each week.
