We are looking for an experienced Play Worker or an individual with experience of working with children aged 4-11, preferably in an after school or childcare setting, to join us.

Based in central Brighton, an understanding of play work and the principles of developing a creative, safe environment for children would be an advantage.

The ability to build strong connections with children from a broad range of backgrounds is necessary.

You will also need patience and empathy, to be able to work calmly with children from a broad range of backgrounds.

You will be pro-active, creative, have lots energy and a genuine passion to make a difference to the lives of children.

Key duties:

  • Be a pro-active, committed team member, with the aim of maintaining an excellent, professional service at all times.
  • Self-motivated - input into planning and preparation of all activities.
  • Seek opportunities to participate fully in sessions and actively work to support one another to deliver the best service possible.

Work directly with children including:
playing, talking, educating, comforting, listening and setting clear boundaries.

  • Ensure the safe care for the children during ASC and Holiday Projects, including the preparation of food and the administration of first aid where appropriate.
  • Understand and meet children's individual needs including those of children with additional needs or children in need of extra support and consideration.
  • Where required, assist the Children's Project Manager with the day to day administration, record keeping and equipment necessary to run the ASC and Holiday Projects smoothly and professionally.
  • Undertake the safe collection of children from local schools, including liaison with parents, carers and school staff.
  • Be committed to and work within the guidelines and policies set out by the organisation and the ASC and Holiday Projects, including, but not limited to - Health and Safety, Child Protection, Safeguarding, Confidentiality and Equal Opportunities and Diversity.
  • Work with other workers and volunteers as a team to foster a sense of involvement of children and their families and to develop best practice.
  • Undertake appropriate induction and receive ongoing training and guidance, in line with the requirements of your role as defined by your line manager.
  • Be an ambassador for the project - promote the work of Tarner Community Project through interaction with parents, events, local schools and other networks.
  • Work with the Children's Project Manager to abide by any recommendation made by OFSTED in their inspection of the ASC and Holiday Projects.
  • Actively participate in team feedback sessions.
  • Alert The Children's Project Manager the CEO or a senior staff member of any issues regarding safeguarding or child safety immediately.
  • Set and maintain professional boundaries with the children, staff and parents.
  • Receive regular supervisions and annual appraisals from the Children's Project Manager in accordance with the supervision policy and appraisal guidelines.
  • Work within the guidelines of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  • Maintain a smart, clean professional appearance at all times, wear branded clothing as provided and ensure hair is tied back when cooking.
  • Hold up to date Food Hygiene certification and enhanced DBS check.
  • Carry out any other responsibilities considered reasonable, as directed by the Children's Project Manager.
