Job Purpose:

To be part of the ID Essence team, building positive relationships and supporting young adults aged 18-25 in women's prisons and after prison in London and the South East; empowering and equipping them to move forward positively in their lives and break free from the cycles of crime they have been caught in.


  • The prison we work in is in Sutton, our office is in East London and community support work is carried out in and around London, depending on the location of those we are supporting._

Key Responsibilities:

  • To have an ongoing caseload of between 1015 young adults aged 1825yrs in HMP Downview who you will support through the following activities:
  • Planning and delivery of non-formal education programmes, such as myLife, in either a 1-to-1 or small group settings;
  • Providing consistent and longterm pastoral and/or mentoring support to young adults on your caseload;
  • Spiritual discipleship and prayer support for those on your caseload who have a Christian faith and want to be supported in this way;
  • Signposting to other relevant provisions and programmes in the prison and supporting them in their engagement with these provisions;
  • Liaising and working in partnership with other relevant stakeholders e.g. Offender Managers, Mental Health Workers, Resettlement Workers, keeping them uptodate and informed of each young adult's engagement with ID Essence's services and any achievements or progress they are making;
  • Building a positive, compassionate and nonjudgmental working relationship with each young adult on your caseload; making them feel safe, valued, supported and empowered to make positive changes;
  • Record keeping of your interactions with those on your caseload and their engagement with ID Essence interventions and writing reports of their engagement and progress at different stages.
  • To work alongside Imago Dei in their prison programmes and chaplaincy support to deliver their 'Free to Be' courses to 1825 year olds when need arises.
  • To assist the Chaplaincy department in their work, particularly in supporting young adults in HMP Downview. Including assisting with Sunday morning services up to 4 times a year.
  • To provide throughthegate community support for young adults on your caseload who have been released and want continued support in the community. Either through continued 1:1 work (both in person or remotely via the phone) or through referral to training and employment opportunities within partner agencies.
  • To help with sourcing and postage of 'release parcels,' 'birthday parcels' and any others as part of our pastoral support of community beneficiaries.
  • To help where needed with ID Essence's innovation, development and facilitation of new courses and services that we identify as being helpful to the young adults in prison and after prison.
  • To embody our inclusive and nonjudgmental approach in the support work you provide young adults in prison and the community.
  • To be a part of the wider Imago Dei team, including attending staff days and some team meetings in their East Grinstead office.

Person Profile

Necessary:

  • Experience of frontline work supporting at least one of the following groups: young people, young adults or women who are marginalised in society.
  • Good initiative and ability to work independently.
  • Excellent at building relationships with young adults/young people in both 1to1 and group settings.
  • Open minded, compassionate and nonjudgmental.
  • Teachability and able to follow instructions.
  • Clear communication skills.
  • Comfortable with both lone working and working in a team.
  • Able and willing to travel to the different locations across London and the South East when needed (travel costs can be claimed on expenses).
  • Cope well in a stressful environment.
  • Good understanding of safety and security in highrisk situations.
  • Trustworthy and able to deal with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Commitment to, and passion for, this work and the young adults we work with.
  • Flexible and able to accommodate change.
  • Able to deal with setbacks and disappointment.
  • Organised with recordkeeping and report writing.
  • It is a genuine occupational requirement that the postholder be from a group that is racially marginalised in the UK, this is due to the nature of the support we need to be able to provide young adults who are also from these groups and in line with our commitment to be representative of the diversity of the young adults we support.
  • Due to the role responsibilities, it is also a genuine occupational requirement of this job role that the postholder be of a Christian faith or have positive links with the Christian faith, permitted under Schedule 9, part 1 of the Equality Act 2010. However, you need to be able to work effectively with people of all faith and none and be happy to adhere to the prison's policies around not proselytising (evangelising).
