To work within the newly established Surveillance and Innovation Unit (SUI) as part of the fast-paced SSI surveillance team, facilitating the prevention, surveillance, investigation and control of surgical site infection (SSI) within the Adult and Paediatrics Acute and Community settings.


To participate in education programmes, quality improvement, innovation and research to ensure as well as develop best practice in this field.

The post holder will be based at the Royal Brompton and will be required to work autonomously as well as within a pro-active dynamic team, operating flexibly within the SSI team structure to ensure that a comprehensive service is provided to the Trust acute adult, children and community services at Guys and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.

  • The post holder will be responsible for participating in the programme of surgical site infection surveillance in adult and paediatric services. This will include timely and accurate data collection, collation, analysis and dissemination of surgical site infection data (SSI) across the patient pathway, as well as assisting in care and strategies to reduce its incidence, assisting specialisms across our Trust as required.
  • The post holder will work with the SSI surveillance team on current and new quality improvement projects, as aligned with strategic objectives for the Trust as well as local/national health economy.
  • The post holder will assist in the evaluation of the feasibility of selected innovations, including appraising the evidence and taking into account patient, public and stakeholder input.
  • The post holder will assist in developing and using strategies for implementing innovation based on critical assessment of the evidence base and of the sustainability of the innovation.
  • The post holder will be research active, supporting the SSI team in internal and external research activities.
  • The post holder will support relevant SSI education programmes, networking events, and other activities such as publications, social media platform presence or similar.

Clinical

  • The post holder will have a key role in the programme of surgical site infection surveillance and participate in other audit activities as appropriate. This will include continuous data collection, validation, analysis and feedback of results to clinicians and other staff.
  • To proactively identify patients at risk of SSI and implementing measures to mitigate this risk. This includes post discharge surveillance and providing wound care for healing wounds as well as escalating care appropriately for wounds showing evidence of early SSI.
  • Work at ward level to introduce, monitor and feedback on surveillance initiatives.
  • To liaise directly with the surveillance team lead to report any increase in infection or outcomes of concerns in patients and to notify of any lapses/deviation from Trust protocols.
  • To complete in a timely fashion Incident Form/Datix and lead on Root Cause Analysis for all deep and organ space wounds or superficial wounds which may trigger Duty of Candour; in line with the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance. A key component of this work is to create and maintain mechanisms to monitor and report improvements.
  • To provide wound care as needed for patients at high risk of SSI as well as providing a follow up and review service for discharged patients. To ensure wounds with evidence of infection are reviewed by the surgical team and/or tissue viability service.
  • To deliver patient education when required e.g. education patients on wound infection prevention on the preoperative open days/sessions for patients scheduled to undergo surgery.
  • To comply with and participate in the Trust's framework for Quality and Safety and Compassion in Practice (6C's).
General

  • To act in accordance within relevant professional codes of practice e.g. professional registration bodies and their statutory guidelines and be accountable for his/her actions at all times
  • Be aware and work within the policies and procedures of Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, carrying out such duties as may be required, and that are commensurate with the responsibility of the grade.
