Salary: £26,832 per annum

The voice of the National Trust in the uplands, you'll be working in partnership to ensure the future health of the Lake District fells. Balancing time out in the fells, come rain or shine, with desk work, you'll lead and develop the upland ranger team in the South Lakes, work with volunteers and take ownership of the paths that conserve habitat and protect the fells for the future.

Contract: 24 month, fixed term

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

You'll have responsibility for erosion control on a quarter of the Lake District's upland paths, including iconic Striding Edge and the Old Man of Coniston. Recognising erosion problems, you'll have a broad palette of upland path repair techniques on hand to control them, preserving upland habitats through a range of practical solutions, sometimes bold but always sensitive.

You'll have the knowledge to navigate nature and landscape designations, multiple stakeholder concerns, risk management, funding requirements, ecology, farming and cultural heritage considerations in devising an effective work programme. You'll also have the people management skills and practical know-how to build relationships and drive delivery of high standard practical work.

You'll work methodically, delivering projects for property and partnership. Able to manage your time and workload, you'll enjoy the variety offered by balancing the office with the outdoors, and the resilience to consistently lead by example. Please note a full UK driving licence is needed for the role.

Who we're looking for

  • People skills which enable strong leadership and the building and maintaining of relationships, both internally and externally
  • Experience of planning and delivering work programmes to meet conservation, access and funding outcomes
  • Understanding and practical experience of risk and compliance processes relevant to countryside settings
  • Practical experience, skills and competencies in relevant land, conservation and access management, including upland path repair
  • People management skills, including setting personal objectives and conducting development reviews
  • Good organisation and prioritisation skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, including public presentation.
