The role of the Community Audiology Department is to provide the school entry hearing screen for all eligible children and to provide a comprehensive hearing assessment service to any child from 0-19 years about whom there may be concerns regarding hearing.

The post holder (s) takes responsibility for the testing of hearing capabilities of children in schools.

The post holder has a designated caseload of schools and is responsible for the hearing screening testing of all children with consent to be hearing screened in those schools.

The post holder tests, records results and monitors outcomes and is also responsible for the appropriate onward referral of these children as and when required depending on test outcomes and following local protocols.


The post holder is required to organise the School Age Hearing Clinics and during these clinics is required to perform more complex tests to determine hearing threshold following national protocol.

The post holder is required to assist the Community Paediatric Audiologist in testing pre-school age children using a full range of behavioural audiological assessment procedures following national protocols and recommended procedures.


The post holder is the first point of contact for parents / guardians and other professionals regarding aspects of their work.

To communicate daily, and work closely with, the Paediatric Audiologist.


To communicate daily with schools, school nursing staff, health visitors, ENT department staff and specialist teachers within the Education department, communicating complex factual information on test procedures, results and outcomes.

To communicate complex and sensitive information to parents/carers on a daily basis using tact, sensitivity, persuasion and reassurance.


To work closely on an individual basis with school age children of all ages in schools, using tact, sensitivity, persuasion and tact.

To work closely with pre-school children and their parents in clinic situations.
