Main duties of the job

To carry out skin prick testing with a range of allergens using standard and patients own materials , including prick-prick tests and to have sound knowledge of interpretation of these tests.

Direct patient care, providing a quality, supportive service to patients/relatives/carers, offering advice, information, support and counselling

To act as an accountable role model through the provision of professional leadership and demonstration of competent practice

Assess a patient's skin suitability for patch test application.

Assist in developing the role of Patch test nurse specialist, to ensure optimal care for patients

Be able to undertake a course of investigation by using , protocols and discussion with the consultant

Advise patients on allergen avoidance measures for a wide range of allergen

Manage a caseload of patients attending for patch testing, carrying out skin assessments, interpreting results of skin patch testing / skin prick testing and advising patient

Undertake skin prick testing for a range of allergens, including prick-prick tests and to have a sound knowledge of interpretation of these tests

To provide a high standard of nursing care for patients attending the dermatology clinic, recognising the needs of the individual patients using assessment and evaluation skills

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for assessing the care needs, and provision of treatment for patients attending the dermatology outpatient clinic and performing patch testing , if required prick testing and other related allergy testing eg intradermal testing, use tests ( according to competency) on patients referred by the dermatology team for this investigation.

The post holder will liaise with other specialities and industry to gather information/ request test materials, samples of individual haptens.

They will collect and maintain data collection about test results, will participate in regular audits, approved clinical trials and research in connection with the patch test activity.

Ensuring patients needs are met during their visit to the dermatology clinic.

Provide efficient and comprehensive general and specialist dermatology services to patients attending the department, including patch testing.

Work in the Dermatology Outpatients Department at Lincoln.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

RGN level 1 Evidence of recent study at diploma level in allergy. Evidence of further professional development

Desirable

Higher qualification in allergy nursing Teaching and assessing qualification

Previous experience

Essential

A minimum of 2-years experience in caring for patients with allergic skin conditions Evidence of teaching in clinical practice
