The work of the Pathogen Genomics Unit is world-class and offers a varied, challenging and rewarding work environment. This is an opportunity to be at the forefront of Microbiology in Wales and internationally.

The role will involve the delivery of routine UKAS accredited pathogen genomic services as well as the development of new services.


The Bioinformatics team in the Pathogen Genomics Unit (PenGU) is the software development and analysis support arm of the Microbiology Division.

It supports genomic diagnostics, bespoke software development, genomic surveillance of communicable disease and infections in Wales, and provides support for Health Protection Teams in outbreak investigation and control

The role will initially be based at Capital Quarter 2 but will be moving to a new site at Coryton (Cardiff Edge) in 2023


To assist line manager and the Unit Head in the provision of a Pathogen Genomics Service by developing advanced bioinformatics and monitoring routine bioinformatic processes for interpretative tests, and undertake research projects to ensure efficient and effective completion and reporting.

To work with the Unit management team in the roll-out of bioinformatic methods for pathogen genomic tests within the Unit.

To ensure that the department meets or exceeds locally and national agreed service standards.

General Responsibilities

  • Work with senior Bioinformatics colleagues to maintain competence in the assessing the performance and interpretation of bioinformatic processes and investigations undertaken in accordance with laboratory policies and protocols.
  • To collaborate with the Unit Head and Senior Bioinformatician to maintain a Bioinformatics Quality Management System in compliance with external accredited regulatory bodies.
  • To maintain high professional standards by continual professional development keeping up to date with advances in pathogen genomics and NGS technology.
  • To maintain a safe environment and to ensure that procedures and competencies are compliant with relevant policies.
  • To assist in the development of internal bioinformatic QC schemes.
