Job summary

Band 5 Ophthalmology Technicians provide technical assessments and assistance to the wider Ophthalmology service by undertaking vision assessment, visual field assessment and imaging of the eye using various imaging modalities including ICG & FFA (performed on UWF Optos or Heidelberg spectralis), OCT, UWF Optos, colour fundus photos and anterior segment imaging (using various devices such as digital camera and slit lamp camera). The post holder will have responsibility for ensuring that accurate and reliable measurements and assessments are undertaken for review by clinical staff, as well as providing training for junior members of staff in all areas

Main duties of the job

To provide technical support to the Ophthalmology service To assess visual acuity To independently perform accurate imaging of the eye using various imaging modalities as mentioned in summary. To independently perform accurate visual field assessment using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser on a range of patients referred from the ophthalmology service. To undertake retinal photography using various imaging devices. To independently perform ICG and FFA imaging using appropriate imaging devices, following appropriate protocols and SOPs. To undertake appropriate visual field tests taking patient ability age, visual acuity and mobility into consideration at all times. To select appropriate imaging modalities for each patient depending on their ocular condition to ensure appropriate testing is carried out and improve overall clinic flow. To undertake intraocular pressure measurement using ORA

Job responsibilities

To provide technical support to the Ophthalmology service To assess visual acuity To independently perform accurate imaging of the eye using various imaging modalities as mentioned in summary. To independently perform accurate visual field assessment using the Humphrey Visual Field Analyser on a range of patients referred from the ophthalmology service. To undertake retinal photography using various imaging devices. To independently perform ICG and FFA imaging using appropriate imaging devices, following appropriate protocols and SOPs. To undertake appropriate visual field tests taking patient ability age, visual acuity and mobility into consideration at all times. To select appropriate imaging modalities for each patient depending on their ocular condition to ensure appropriate testing is carried out and improve overall clinic flow. To undertake intraocular pressure measurement using ORA To adjust variables to ensure optimum performance for each patient. To measure a patients average prescription measurement using Kowa autorefractor. To be able to measure patients glasses accurately on a lens meter. To use knowledge and experience to identify when a patient is not complying with an assessment, and correctly respond by informing appropriate medical staff. To be able to communicate information with patients using a kind and understanding manner to ensure best test results while making sure the patient is comfortable many patients will be elderly and require moderate physical assistance. Empathy is needed when dealing with patients with sight threatening and life changing sight problems, along with any anxiety that may accompany the diagnosis. To liaise with other staff within the service to ensure a good patient experience, keep visits to a minimum and maximise resources. To use knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye and visual pathway to help identify pathology and adjust testing procedures as appropriate. To ensure that tests are saved correctly on all devices for review by a clinician. To ensure effective imaging is carried out for patients attending virtual appointments to improve patient experience and obtaining correct imaging for review. To perform and demonstrate tests to other members of staff for teaching purposes when necessary. To work independently within departmental guidelines and identify when assistance from other staff members is necessary. To communicate well with all members of the team and demonstrate a courteous and helpful approach to patients and visitors. To be adaptable and manage a moderate to heavy workload with appropriate speed and efficiency which may be unpredictable and require changes and prioritisation at short notice to meet service demand. To assist with equipment calibration to ensure the safe use of all devices and effective measurements for review. To keep line manager informed of any equipment faults. To provide appropriate training to junior staff members and oversee their competencies. To work together with the Senior imaging team to gather feedback for clinical improvement and implement necessary changes. To work closely with Senior imaging and ophthalmic research team to undertake research studies and obtain certification images to evidence competencies in a timely manner. To undertake imaging as per research protocols and independently complete all administrative related tasks including uploading of images to study reading centers. Person Specification

Education and qualifications

Essential

GCSEs in English and Maths at level C or above

Desirable

Certificate of Higher Education in OCT Capture Diploma in OCT interpretation Extensive experience in Ophthalmic imaging and photography BSc (Hons) Healthcare Science (Ophthalmic Imaging), OR Foundation degree in Optical Coherence Tomography Member of a professional body

Knowledge and experience

Essential

Extensive ophthalmic imaging experience Knowledge of how differing imaging devices work Committed to CPD and PDP through relevant courses and in-house training

Desirable

Previous experience of ICG and FFA testing GCP training Previous experience of Ophthalmic research imaging

Skills and knowledge

Essential

Confident in all communication styles Ability to work within tight deadlines. Good computer skills
