Voice ) is an online magazine which supports young people to explore the arts, share their work and opinions and find pathways into the creative industries. We cover arts, culture, politics and technology.

The magazine attracts 300k visitors pa and has a user community of 8k, the majority aged 13-30, who post creative work, media, features and reviews.


Voice magazine is looking for an editor to lead the content of this lively arts and cultural magazine for young people and emerging creatives.

You will work with Voice's Managing Editor to develop and implement the editorial plan and lead a network of young contributors.

You will build links with partners to cover special topics and seek out appealing content for the 16-30 audience. As a Midlands-based charity we are particularly seeking applicants living in the Midlands.

The role
This role will suit a young professional with two or more years of editorial and/or journalism experience.

It is a self-employed freelance contract, 9.5 days or 76 hours per month, running from 1 August 2024 (or as soon as possible after) to 31 March 2025 with likely extension.

The hourly rate is £20 plus travel expenses. The role is remote with occasional meetings in the Midlands. A schedule of services is attached as an Appendix.


As well as being a magazine and an open platform, Voice acts as a training ground for young people with limited resources and contacts: we provide work experience, mentoring, professional workshops, freelance commissions and staff roles which enable participants to develop skills and build a portfolio for future jobs.

The editor will support team members to run the following projects:

  • young arts reviewer projects across the Midlands where young people explore their local arts scene
- a Voice Reviewer network who cover major events and festivals
- a training programme for Voice Contributors, supporting them to build blogging, reviewing and journalism skills
- short internships for undergraduates studying journalism

Skills and profile required for this role

  • Skills_

  • Strong and accurate writing in an appropriate style for this audience
  • Experience of editing copy
  • Experience of planning editorial content
  • Digital media expertise, including use of sound and media on websites and social media
  • Knowledge of the arts and media
  • Experience of participatory or training work with young people would be an asset but is not essential

Voice Editor _(freelance, core time: 76 hours or 9.5 days pm)_


This role plans, commissions, develops and oversees all content on the Voice magazine website, including working with trainees and volunteers to create content.

You will report to Tom Inniss, Voice Managing Editor (VME)

Services will include, but may not be limited to:

Editorial

  • Create and implement the Voice Editorial Plan working with the VME, including themes, events and key news moments to link with
  • Manage content daytoday, commissioning work from Voice Contributors and external contributors according to the editorial plan
  • Copy edit work from Voice Contributors and external contributors
  • Manage the Voice homepage including writing Voicebox intros, managing display of Voiceboxes and all featured items. Ensure headers are updated monthly to reflect current content
  • Build relationships with external partners to develop content and collaborations
  • Create content as required
  • Analyse traffic and user trends and write monthly editorial report

Resources on Voice

  • Lead the Careers on Voice area, commissioning new features for the series and building links with other careers websites and events
  • Maintain and develop the Resources on Voice and Media on Voice areas
  • Work with VME and other team members to provide content for Arts Award on Voice and Trinity on Voice

Creative Pathways (Voice Reviewers, Voice Contributors and interns)

  • Recruit Voice Contributors and interns, with support from the Voice Coordinator
