Job description


The post holder will join a team of researchers at KCL researching how speech signals change with our mental health.

As part of this work, we are currently assessing how the way in which we record and process speech can impact the reliability of these analyses.

The post holder will assist in the recruitment, administration, recording, data organisation and pre-processing in a pilot study exploring how voices vary with time of day and between days.

The project is led by Dr Nicholas Cummins and Dr Judith Dineley who are both highly passionate about integrating speech analysis into clinical practice.

The post also comes with opportunities to contribute to analysis and assist in the preparation of publications.

This post will be offered on a fixed-term contract for 6 months

This is a part-time post - 40% full time equivalent

Key responsibilities

  • To assist with the recruitment of healthy participants into a speech recording study
  • Conduct recordings of healthy participants under the guidance of the project leads
  • Assist with data annotation and organization of the collected speech files
  • The above list of responsibilities may not be exhaustive, and the post holder will be required to undertake such tasks and responsibilities as may reasonably be expected within the scope and grading of the post._
Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • Demonstrable experience in mental health research, experience recruiting participants for research studies
  • Familiarity with statistical software packages such as R
  • Experience of data analyses
  • Experience of applied health research
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Motivated and self-disciplined
  • Willingness to learn new methods
Desirable criteria

  • Experience working with Python
  • Experience working with speech data
  • Competence in standard medical statistics
  • Willingness to develop practical audio recording skills
