Job summary

The post holder will cross two specialities between the Gynaecology department and the Oncology Department both in Women's Children, Cancer, and Clinical Services division. There are dedicated clinicians in both specialities working together with currently 4 Gynae Cancer consultants and 2 Clinical Oncologists, 1 Medical Oncologist in Oncology.

The Gynaecology team provide a wide range of inpatient and outpatient services These gynaecology clinics are for the assessment of women who have a symptom that means they may have a gynaecological cancer.

The clinics aim to assess and diagnose whether a woman has a gynaecological cancer and give them an answer within 28 days of the referral.

The Gynae oncology department provides high quality cancer services in Common symptoms assessed are post-menopausal bleeding, an abnormal looking cervix, a lump or ulcer on the vulva, abdominal swelling/bloating and a raised Ca1-25 blood test.

If a diagnosis of cancer is made, there is usually a further detailed CT or MRI scan. Treatment, if needed, is then either offered at The North Middlesex Hospital or the patient referred to the Gynaecological Cancer Centre at University College Hospital where a wider range of specialist treatments is available

Main duties of the job

Clinical

To excel and innovate by practicing as an autonomous clinical practitioner, whilst working as part of the multidisciplinary team, with self-management of own caseload of patients. Using advanced verbal and non-verbal communication skills maintain effective and timely communication with patients, carers and multi-professionals to ensure seamless service delivery. Ensuring patients are aware of their situation, planned investigations and treatments. Providing contact details as their key worker and for informational and psychological support. Provide support, verbal and written information on Gynae cancers for newly referred patients and their families, enabling patients to make an informed decision on their treatment Perform advanced clinical skills in assessment and/or diagnosis and/or treatments of symptoms including the development of nurse led clinics which may be telephone or virtual. Assess new and follow-up patients in the nurse led and MDT clinics to identify their psychological, emotional, spiritual, psycho-social and cultural needs ensuring holistic needs assessment are carried out and needs identified met. Evaluate holistic patient care based on sound rationale and evidence-based practice to influence and implement treatment or support.

Managerial/Leadership

Provide specialist and expert knowledge and advice to clinical colleagues, patients/carers/relatives to positively influence, directly or indirectly, their care within all aspects of Gynae/Oncology, using advanced clinical knowledge and evidence-based practice. Evaluate service delivery, identify areas of improvement and initiate change Ensure the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources; make recommendations regarding workforce, supplies and equipment or quality service changes with savings. Help to co-ordinate the development of nursing policies, procedures and patient information relating to the care of patients with Gynae cancers With appropriate experience, develop nurse led upper GI clinics, promoting a seamless patient pathway. Participate and contribute as a member of the Cancer and Palliative care team in the strategic planning of cancer services at NMUH Support the delivery of cancer 14, 31, 28 fds, and 62 day wait targets Effectively manage time and caseload in order to address the needs of a changing and developing service, planning and organizing a broad range of activities. Maintain continuous liaison with Cancer Lead Nurse and identify opportunities for improvements in service provision. Complete an annual service review and job plan including qualitative and quantitative data. Monitor health, safety and security of self and others promoting best practice in the clinical field.

Governance

Investigate risk events and complaints acting as an investigating officer, undertaking training as required. Share outcomes with the relevant members of the team in an open and positive way using the experience and feedback constructively promoting change where appropriate. Act to resolve issues that contribute to an increased risk assessment Role model behaviours that promote a fair culture or ownership and responsibility. Encourage the reporting of all incidents Support the implementation of change to practice based on evidence of previous complaints.

Research and Development

Promote best practice, ensuring practice is evidence based. Complete an annual Patient satisfaction survey for your service and present the findings to the Oncology CNS group and the wider team. Contribute to the Cancer Patient Experience survey. Participate in audit and quality improvement projects within the speciality locally, across the sector and nationally. Identify and appropriately represent evidence to demonstrate any gaps in service provision impacting on patients. Analyses of patient data and use it to enhance the overall service provision Present audit/research topics in relevant forums. Publish in relevant professional journals and websites Ensure that patient assessments meet local and national requirements for record keeping standards/guidelines Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential

Registered Nurse. Bsc (Hons) in Nursing. Qualified Non-Medical Prescriber or to undertake the programme within 1 year in order to continue in the role (V300).

Desirable

Educated to Masters level or demonstrate equivalent level of knowledge and experience. CSW smear takers course.

Skills and abilities

Essential

Highly developed oral and written communication skills with patients and the MDT; confidence to discuss sensitive, complex patient management and to liaise and negotiate with other members of the MDT. Evidence of ability to critique own practice.

Desirable

Teaching, mentoring and assessment skills. Excellent time management and organisation skills.

Experience

Extensive post registration nursing experience in an hysteroscopy specialist environment . Experience of working autonomously as an advanced clinical practitioner.
