Who are we?
Newmedica are one of the leading providers of NHS ophthalmology services in England, providing outpatients appointments, diagnostic testing and eye surgery.
We care for more than 225,000 NHS and private patients a year in over 26 locations and we're growing.
Role overview
Ophthalmic Assistants are the public face of Newmedica and are integral to the successful operation of the clinic and theatre.
They are responsible for performing clinical tests and supporting the clinical assessment of each patient and for ensuring that all patients understand their treatment.
They are also responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient administration of the clinic, including retrieving patient notes, recording and filing clinical outcomes and utilising Newmedica's electronic patient records.
In theatre They are responsible for ensuring the smooth and efficient administration of the theatre including the logging of events, medication, paperwork and maintaining electronic systems.
They work with patients to support with positioning on the theatre bed, and support the theatre team with gowning and maintaining high standards of cleaning between each patient, and at the start and end of every day.
Combining a friendly and accessible personal manner with advanced clinical testing skills, they pride themselves in delivering a great patient experience and their ability to work within small teams to maintain and enhance processes to maximise quality and efficiency is an essential attribute of an effective ophthalmic assistant.
It is expected that the company's growth plans will provide ongoing challenges for the post-holders as well as appropriate career development opportunities.
Ophthalmic Assistants receive a comprehensive and planned on-the-job training programmes; one dedicated to clinic and a separate programme for the theatre.
All training programmes are complimented with face to face support, online forums and on occasions, involve placements at other Newmedica services.
What skills and experience do I need?
We'll provide training so experience isn't always needed, but the following things will be advantageous:
- Previous experience of working with patients or in a customer facing role
- Knowledge of eye physiology and treatment or a keen interest to build knowledge in this area
- A competent user of all Office 365 programmes & comfortable working on new systems such as patient record systems or diagnostic programmes.
- An excellent grasp of the English language both verbally and in written format
- Experience of dealing with a variety of data for example patient records, GP and patient correspondence and diagnostic test results
- A good team player happy to jump in and support others when required
