Job Purpose
To support the welcome team in providing a warm, courteous and engaging welcome to all visitors to The Sill.

The Centre is the "gateway" to the most popular central section of Hadrian's Wall and to the wider National Park.

The visitor engagement assistants will support the welcome team to enhance our visitors' experience.

Promotion of the Sill and signposting to information about the wider Northumberland National Park are key elements of this role.


Key Result Areas:

Support and Advocacy

  • Proactively welcome and engage with visitors to the Sill; in a warm and courteous manner and orientate visitors around the building
  • Provide information, inspiration and advice to visitors in order to increase their knowledge and enhance the enjoyment of the National Park and surrounding area and to give a better understanding of the Park
  • Check that all areas are clean, well presented and well maintained at all times, including exhibitions, and that the retail areas are fully stocked, well labelled and clean.
  • Support the day to day running of the centre
  • Work with and support volunteers, making sure they have the resources and information they need.
  • Promote shop merchandise and the café menu to customers, using knowledge of local suppliers to enhance the offer and generate sales
  • Using the till to process sales in the shop or café
  • Unpacking and checking deliveries, stocking shelves, tidying and cleaning
  • Clearing tables, taking orders and other general tasks in the café as and when required
  • Supporting the staff team to manage the flow of visitors on site.
  • Other relevant tasks where appropriate
Other Duties

  • Participate in training and development as required
  • Encourage visitors to donate, sign up to gift aid and recruit to membership
  • Assist with room setting, for example moving tables and chairs as required
  • Proactively support the promotion of equality and inclusion in all areas of work.
  • Other comparable duties as may be required.

Essential Requirements
Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Good knowledge and interest in Northumberland National Park and the surrounding area including geography, roads and communications, places of interest & local history.

Skills:

  • Good customer care skills with the ability to relate and communicate effectively with a wide range of customers
Experience

  • Willingness to learn about tourism and customer service.
  • Previous experience of working with the public.
Personal Qualities

  • Passionate about Northumberland National Park and the surrounding area.
  • Friendly and communicative with a commitment to customer care.
  • Dependable, reliable, flexible and a good timekeeper.
  • Displays and encourages high standards of honesty, integrity, openness and respect for others.
  • Ability to work a flexible working pattern including working weekends, bank holidays and some evenings. Rotas and hours worked can vary between seasons throughout the year.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional at all times
Role Requirements

  • This role will require the ability to stand and/or walk around for sustained periods of time with some need to bend or carry items.
  • To be well presented at all times, including wearing a uniform
  • May be required to work at other sites from time to time
  • Lone working may be required
  • Opening and closing at Walltown kiosk

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience of working or volunteering in tourism
  • Experience of working or volunteering in an attraction or heritage/cultural venue
  • Experience working in hospitality
  • Food hygiene certificate
