Overall Purpose:
Senior Lecturer Academic Support Officer plays a vital role in our academic management structure, ensuring that a designated group of students receives consistent and high-quality learning, teaching, and assessment experiences. Additionally, the Senior Lecturer empowers students to maximize learning opportunities and collaborate with relevant partners to help them reach their full potential. This role encompasses the complete responsibilities of a Senior Lecturer, along with academic and student support management duties as outlined below. The incumbent will combine teaching, student support, and academic management within their respective School to ensure students are engaged and receive a top-notch academic experience throughout their program.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Academic Management
- Handle line management responsibilities for a group of Academic Colleagues supporting students.
- Implement a work allocation model for the team.
- Establish effective mechanisms for reporting staff and students' progress.
- Ensure academic processes comply with policies and regulations set by awarding bodies.
- Provide necessary line management support for the assigned team.
- Assist in staff development processes for the team.
- Participate in staff and student recruitment and induction processes.
- Mentor less experienced colleagues and offer guidance on personal development.
- Student Support
- Act as the primary academic contact for a group of assigned students.
- Collaborate with various teams to support student needs and ensure support plans are in place.
- Advocate for student voices and manage their academic requirements effectively.
- Address any issues with student engagement or performance, guiding students to appropriate College services.
- Handle any pastoral concerns students may have, directing them to relevant services.
- Monitor individual students' Learning Support Plans and coordinate with specialist services as needed.
- Teaching
- Support Learning, Teaching, and Assessment to ensure a high-quality academic experience for each student.
- Design teaching materials and deliver them across modules or within a specific subject area.
- Create detailed Scheme of works for academic review and approval.
- Engage students with the program and modules effectively to meet KPIs.
- Communicate any concerns affecting academic quality to relevant stakeholders and offer recommendations.
- Review module evaluations and contribute to monitoring reports and plans.
- Assessment and Marking
- Provide timely and constructive feedback to students.
- Develop and assess summative assignments according to guidelines and provide feedback within set deadlines.
- Promote Academic Integrity and address potential academic misconduct cases.
- Review all module assessments to align with expectations of awarding bodies.
- Update assessments as needed for each academic year.
- Oversee External Examiner and Assessment Board Reports.
- Contribute to the Annual Monitoring Report.
- Scholarship
- Engage in scholarship activities within the School to enhance classroom impact.
- Support the School's plans in line with the College's Research and Scholarship strategy.
EXPERIENCE & PERSONAL QUALITIES
Essential:
- Extensive student support and course management experience at course and degree levels.
- Knowledge of quality assurance and validation in HE programs.
- Significant experience in a relevant subject area.
- Strong communication skills and ability to engage various stakeholders effectively.
- Capacity to influence, collaborate, and resolve complex problems.
- Desirable:
- Experience in research and enterprise activities.
- Ability to develop external networks.
Essential:
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills, including digital capabilities.
- Proficiency in using IT for teaching and administrative tasks.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas to diverse groups.
- Desirable:
- Familiarity with a range of delivery techniques to engage students effectively.
Essential:
- Master's degree in a relevant subject.
- Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or willingness to achieve it.
- Experience in teaching and curriculum development in an HE environment.
- Desirable:
- PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area.
- Teaching qualification or readiness to obtain one.
- Membership of a Professional Regulatory Body.
