Job Title: Senior Lecturer in Computing

School/Function: School of Higher Education

Responsible for: Teaching on their specialist subject to students

Job Description:

Overall Purpose:

The role of Computing Lecturer in the School involves designing, developing, and producing learning and teaching material, delivering across a range of modules or within a subject area. The responsibility includes ensuring student engagement, achievement of learning outcomes, and providing a high-quality student experience. Additionally, the lecturer may support students across a program in their learning journey.

Specific duties and responsibilities

Teaching and Learning:

  • Teach a set number of sessions each week, including lectures, seminars, and tutorials.
  • Maintain attendance records for teaching sessions and collaborate with the attendance team to ensure accuracy of information on digital registers.
  • Deliver/facilitate teaching sessions following approved program and module specifications.
  • Utilize digital provisions such as VLEs and MS Teams.
  • Develop teaching materials for modules.
  • Update class notes and materials, ensuring regular VLE updates.
  • Make suggestions for improving student academic experience through appropriate channels.
  • Identify the need for content or structure development in modules with colleagues and propose necessary changes.

Assessment and Marking:

  • Set assessments for students and ensure at least a 90% submission rate of assessments for all modules on time.
  • Support in the production of module/unit assessments and ensure approval according to relevant procedures.
  • Participate in standardization and moderation meetings as needed.
  • Provide students with formative feedback where necessary.
  • Mark summative assessments per approved brief and offer timely feedback to students within set deadlines.
  • Identify potential academic misconduct cases and escalate following assessment board procedures.

Student Support:

  • Address any student engagement or performance issues, referring students to specialized College services as required.
  • Handle pastoral requirements of students and direct them to relevant College services if needed.
  • Monitor individual students' Learning Support Plans' progress, coordinating with specialist services as necessary.

Experience and Personal Qualities:

  • Experience or knowledge of quality assurance and validation of HE modules/programs.
  • Experience or knowledge of higher education and ability to employ various delivery techniques to inspire and engage students.
  • Considerable experience within a relevant subject area.
  • Positive attitude towards colleagues and students.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, engaging the target audience.
  • Ability to influence, collaborate, and interact effectively with various stakeholders.
  • Expert guidance provision to students and other areas, resolving complex problems.
  • Achievement of key performance indicators through persuasion and negotiation.
  • Agility to respond and adapt swiftly to changing events.
  • Excellent communication, networking, and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstration of independent self-management and teamwork.
  • Handling competing priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Display of competencies supporting the University's core values.
  • Flexibility, innovation, and creativity.

Education and Professional Qualifications:

Essential:

  • Master's degree in relevant subject discipline.
  • Fellowship of the Advanced Higher Education (HEA) or readiness to work towards it within 12 months.
  • Broad specialist knowledge in the discipline for teaching program development.
  • Experience in teaching, curriculum development, and quality management in an HE environment.
  • Digital skills suitable for learning, teaching, and assessment.
