The Role
The current competition is dedicated to pulmonary hypertension research.
The Scholarship is open to doctors at registrar level or equivalent with a special interest in respiratory medicine, from across the world.
Applicants who have already reached the level of consultant or equivalent will only be considered under exceptional circumstances.
As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles.
These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.

- Carry out an original research project related to a scientific or clinical aspect of pulmonary hypertension, with a view to achieving a research degree
- Carry out any specific clinical duties that complement/facilitate the delivery of the research project
- Assist a named supervisor(s) in ensuring that all regulatory requirements and research governance for the project are in place
- Attend and contribute to laboratory group/research meetings
- Prepare research work for publication and for presentation at scientific meetings
- Contribute to the wider research and clinical activity in the Newcastle Respiratory Medicine community
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Evidence of demonstrable recent fulltime clinical experience (or equivalent parttime experience), with some experience of fulltime respiratory medicine or pulmonology with a regular oncall commitment
- Good organisational skills
- Evidence of good verbal and written communication in English
- A good understanding of clinical research governance
- Experience of, and competence in, practical procedures relevant to respiratory medicine, such as bronchoscopy and pleural procedures
- Evidence of previous laboratory experience
- Evidence of previous clinical research experience such as clinical trials or observational studies
- Previous publication of original research manuscripts, case reports or reviews
- Presentation of research work at national or international meetings
- Previous time spent in a research laboratory or a clinical research setting
- Teaching and mentoring experience
- Evidence of participation in clinical audit
- Able to work as part of a team but also independently
- Willing to learn new techniques and concepts
- Potential to undertake independent research
- Alignment with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust's Core & Professional Behaviours
- Flexible approach to service delivery and committed approach to development
- A commitment to personal/unitary Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
- Supportive attitude towards work colleagues

- Enthusiastic, with ability to work under pressure
- Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and Health clearances
- Desire to carry out on call duties, should the opportunity arise
Qualifications:
- MB BS, MD or equivalent medical undergraduate degree
- Advanced life support training (ALS) or equivalent
- Intercalated research degree or equivalent
- MRCP (UK) or an equivalent postgraduate medical qualification
- Current IHC Good Clinical Practice training certificate, or equivalent
