BACKGROUND TO GLMCC:

  • Green Lane Masjid and Community Centre is a leading UK mosque situated in the heart of Birmingham serving the community since 1979. Operating from its awardwinning grade II listed Victorian building, GLMCC fulfils its mission of inspiring, educating and serving through its educational college, outreach work, welfare services, youth work, international humanitarian wing, as well as its fully functional mosque which is attended by thousands every week._

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:


Green Lane Masjid & Community Centre in partnership with Macmillan Cancer support will be providing a three-year project to support Muslims living with cancer in Birmingham.

This role will be a vital part in supporting Muslim cancer patients at GLMCC.


This role will help provide general information and support about cancer and cancer services, along with enabling cancer patients and their families to navigate the health and social care system and make choices that are best for their life.

A key aspect of the role involves daily and direct (e.g., face to face and telephone) communication with people affected by cancer, relatives, carers, and other health and social care professionals.

Communication in this context requires a high degree of empathy, understanding, diplomacy, honesty and integrity.


The role of the Support Worker will be to focus on providing culturally sensitive emotional and practical support to male members of the GLMCC congregation facing cancer (and their carers).


2. MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE ROLE

  • Provide telephone and facetoface support and/or signpost to internal/external support services.
  • Develop links and relationships with a wide range of partners across public, private and third sector organisations, harnessing their commitment and support to generate referrals into the service.
  • Communicate effectively with a wide range of people to build and sustain effective and positive relationships across public, private, community and voluntary sectors, to develop relationships, and joint working in support of the project.
  • Promote and publicise the GLM Cancer support service (supported by Macmillan) within the masjid, externally, and in collaboration with partners.
  • Host information stalls in community centres, public spaces, hospitals and other places of worship.
  • Must have the ability to recognise, respond, and act appropriately, escalating any sudden/acute matters of concern. This may also involve contacting emergency services.
  • In line with outreach services, some home visits may be required, where necessary, to provide emotional and practical support.
  • Make preplanned telephone calls to people living with cancer to assess ongoing needs
  • Identify indicators of need or changes in need through telephone contact and respond appropriately.
  • Act as an advocate and facilitator to resolve issues that may be perceived as barriers to care
  • Help people living with cancer and carers to contact health services when they feel that their condition or needs have changed.
  • Support people living with cancer to access appropriate information and support, by signposting to a range of support services and take a personcentered approach which helps people to selfmanage where appropriate.
  • Encourage and support active and healthy lifestyle choices.
  • Help people living with cancer and carers to understand what signs, symptoms or situations to be aware of that would indicate concern.
  • Capture sensitive data and keep record of contact details and case notes in accordance with policies, ensuring accurate records of interactions with all service users are maintained.
  • Information and data collection for project monitoring and evaluation as required by Macmillan and Green Lane Masjid.
  • Document and monitor all aspects of support and service delivery, supporting data collection for audit.
  • Write progress reports to present to partners and leadership teams.
  • Work within GDPR rules and regulations
