The RRDN Strategic Development Director is the senior officer responsible for the development, delivery and implementation of RRDN strategic plans to build research capacity and capability at organisational and regional level with particular emphasis on addressing the needs of the life sciences industry (across both commercial contract and commercial collaborative research). They will develop strong working collaborations and partnerships with organisations and leaders in health and care research and services in the RRDN region and seek to improve efficiency and effectiveness wherever possible.

The purpose of the RDN is to support the effective and efficient initiation and delivery of funded research across the health and care system in England for the benefit of patients, the health and care system and the economy. The RRDN Strategic Development Director will be responsible for creating and leading a 3-year RRDN Strategic Implementation Plan in line with the RDN strategic aims. The RRDN Strategic Implementation Plan will be developed in conjunction with regional partners, including NHSE regional offices, ICSs, AHSNs, patients and the public and should;

● Include measures to tackle health inequalities, and;

● Deliver the objectives of the NIHR Best Research for Best Health and Saving and Improving Lives: The Future of UK Clinical Research Delivery March 1, Lord O'Shaughnessy's review, and any subsequent national reviews and policy directives.

The RRDN Strategic Development Director will also work with the RDN Coordinating Centre (RDNCC) in the strategic oversight of the RDN Portfolio. This function will ensure that the Portfolio is maintained as a cohort of high-quality, fully-funded, viable and deliverable studies that are important to health and social care. The RRDN Strategic Development Director will maintain expert and in-depth knowledge of the capacity and capabilities of the infrastructure, settings, sites and investigators available to support and deliver research in the region (particularly in respect of commercial research).

Regionally the RRDN Strategic Development Director will line manage and coordinate the work of the teams established to support strategic development of research delivery capability and capacity, Portfolio oversight, and RRDN support functions. Alongside their regional responsibilities the RRDN Strategic Development Director will co-develop and lead national programmes of work in collaboration with the RDNCC.
