The post holder will be part of a team responsible for providing coding service across income generating services.

The post holder will hold an ACC qualification with an excellent knowledge of ICD10 and OPCS 4 classification systems.

They will have clinical coding skills and an ability to extract clinical coding data from a variety of sources including medical notes and trust systems.


The post holder will serve as the Specialist Accredited Clinical Coder responsible for day-to-day coding and management of uncoded activity in assigned clinical units / specialties in order to meet strict deadlines.


They will be required to assist the Head of Clinical Coding in clinical coding audits, quality assurance and supervision of trainees and the clinical coding co-ordinators.


Responsibilities will include ensuring that clinical coding is accurate, complete and timely, and that the clinical coding conforms to national standards.


This role will require great attention to detail and a logical thought process as well as vast amount of knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology.


To abstract relevant clinical information from case notes, clinical systems, discharge summaries and any other source documentation that is deemed fit for purpose and, translate them into ICD 10 and OPCS 4.7 classification codes and input them in a timely manner as per National Standards and local policies using the Trust's EPR.


  • To lead and be responsible for the coding function within the assigned clinical units/ specialties.
  • To assist the Head of Clinical Coding to develop, maintain and manage a skilled efficient coding team in order to provide high quality clinical coding service within the Trust.
  • To achieve accurate, timely, and consistent clinical coding within set standards and targets.
  • To be responsible for monitoring and checking quality of coded data within the assigned clinical units / specialties.
  • To attend various meetings and deliver presentations on clinical coding when required.

Clinical Coding

  • To assist in coordinating internal and external clinical coding audits.
  • To initiate, build and maintain a productive working relationship with clinical and nonclinical members of staff.
  • To initiate, develop and maintain the necessary processes to ensure information is made available to all clinical coders in the team.
  • To keep fully uptodate with national developments such as Payment by Results in order to understand the impact of changes at the local level.
  • To ensure that all outstanding clinical coding errors and documentation inconsistencies are dealt with within agreed deadlines, to support the timeliness of accurate clinical coding information.
  • To assist in identifying, monitoring, and reporting of data quality issues.
  • To routinely check reports for inconsistencies and initiate action to resolve issues.
  • To raise all coding issues with the Head of Clinical Coding to ensure that they are kept informed of any developments which might affect the provision of an efficient and effective coding service.
  • To assist in the provision of an effective and efficient clinical coding service by ensuring compliance with the recommendations of any clinical coding audits carried out.
  • To work with clinicians and medical staff to agree improvement in clinical documentation and to develop action plans to ensure clinical coding is accurate, complete and timely.
  • The post will develop and will need to incorporate other duties to meet the changing needs of the organisation as the clinical coding services undergo a restructuring and these changes will be agreed between the post holder and line manager.
