The Opportunity:


Music _(The Reid School of Music) _is looking for a tutor with excellent mathematics skills to join a team of practice tutors assisting with tutoring, feedback and assessment during the first semester of the academic year.

The Acoustics course sits within an established programme and with specified learning outcomes as part of the undergraduate and postgraduate Acoustics and Music Technology programmes.

As a tutor on Acoustics, you will be delivering the weekly 2-hour tutorial on the fundamental mathematics and physics of acoustic systems, taking students through example problems.

The tutorials complement the weekly taught theory lectures.

Relevant learning outcomes for students, which are met by the tutorials, include:

  • Deriving equations describing the behaviour of canonical acoustical systems, such as oscillators, strings, membranes, and acoustic tubes.
  • Using boundary and/or initial conditions to solve problems involving the propagation of sound in canonical acoustical systems, including through evaluation of travelling wave solutions and/or impedancebased analysis.
  • Deriving expressions for modal shapes, frequencies, and phase and group velocities for sound in canonical acoustical systems.
