Training & support will be provided to develop your autonomous practitioner skills which will support your career development within GI Nursing.


The Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) will be expected to exhibit specific skills in the management of disorders of the lower gastrointestinal tract arising from the bowel cancer screening programme.

This will include undertaking assessment, education and counselling wherever appropriate.


The post holder will work closely with the Lead SSP, SSP's, endoscopy team, colorectal team, pathology, radiology and cancer services in the trust and have a clinical commitment to the bowel cancer screening centre.


The post holder will be responsible for providing the SSP/ nursing contribution within the bowel cancer screening service in accordance with local and national specifications.

This maybe in one or more locations and will include weekends on rotation to ensure full service flexibility to the screening populations.

The role involves the ability to integrate, communicate, support and be a role model to a wide multi-disciplinary group in a centre of excellence.

Additional language skills are useful but not essential.

The screening centre is currently open Monday to Friday 8am-6pm (Saturday ad hoc depending on service requirements).


This post is initially for 18 months to cover Maternity leave but there maybe the potential opportunity for a substantive post.


There is access, support and requirements to attend and pass national training and education courses to ensure competency is achieved and thus optimal working as an SSP.

This includes both the FOBT & Lynch Screening Service, in one or more locations and including service flexibility to the screening populations.

We are a university teaching NHS trust, in recognition of the important role we play in training clinicians of the future and bringing the benefits of research to the public.


The role will involve collaborative working with a team of SSP's, current and other endoscopy units in satellite screening locations to ensure delivery of the screening service in these areas.

The SSP will be supported by the Lead SSP's, Senior SSP's, Clinical Programme Manager & (non clinical) Programme Manager.

The SSP is expected to be an experienced nurse showing professional & personal development.

It is essential that the post holder can work within a diverse team, provide autonomous decision making and be aware of their limitations in accordance with NMC.

The role involves the ability to integrate, communicate, support and be a role model to a wide multi-disciplinary group in a centre of excellence.

The SSP clinical duties are as defined in the screening centres overall demand and capacity planning and SSP's weekly sessional commitments
