The postholder will provide care for patients via the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. Clinic assessments will be carried out before patients undergo diagnostic tests as part of the cancer pathway.

The role of the specialist screening practitioner is to act as the advocate for the patient undergoing diagnostic tests before being diagnosed with a bowel cancer.

The role is varied and allows the postholder to learn new skills and knowledge.


The Specialist screening practitioner (SSP) will assess patients suitability to have diagnostic tests as part of the bowel cancer screening programme.

They will act as the patients advocate at the colonoscopy procedure whilst collecting data to enter into the Bowel Cancer Screening computer system.

The SSP is responsible for ensuring that any specimens are clearly marked and processed.

results will be obtained by the SSP who will then discuss these with the screening endoscopist before deciding on the appropriate follow up pathway for the patient.


This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Nurse to become part of the Bowel Screening Service Team for North East London.


You will be based across any of the sites forming part of the NE London Screening Centre and will play a pivotal role in co-ordinating and providing care from the screening centre to address the needs of individuals as a consequence of the screening programme.

Your role will encompass the nurse led clinic support of patients requiring a screening colonoscopy and acting as the patients' advocate supporting them to navigate and make informed choices at all stages of the screening process.

There are many opportunities for service development, personal and professional development and education will be actively encouraged and supported.

This is a full time position, Monday to Friday although flexible working may be required as the service develops.
