Children North East exists because growing up can be hard.

We work with babies, children and young people through the rollercoaster of growing up in their families, schools and communities.


Our Poverty Proofing model was developed in 2014 as a response to children and young people telling us that 'if there is one place it is miserable to be poor it's in school'.

Now, with over 8 years of delivering our Poverty Proofing the School Day model, we have been reaching out to other sectors, including health, culture and early years to explore the notion that no activity or planned activity should identify, exclude, treat differently or make assumptions about those with less financial resource.


We are looking for an Operational Lead for all of our Poverty Proofing work across the sectors that we work in.

With an ambitious programme of activity already planning for , we are looking for someone with passion and drive to grow this work across the North East and Nationally.


Main Responsibilities

Delivery of portfolio:
Oversee the management of operational delivery in line with our portfolio of work

This will include:

Fiscal management:

As Operational Lead you will have delegated responsibility (Operational Director maintains overall accountability) in ensuring that all fiscal management within your portfolio is managed to the highest standards.

You will work alongside the Head of Finance to ensure that current and future budgets are in line with agreed KPI's

This will include:

  • Control of current budgets meeting monthly with Head of Finance to ensure that all costs agreed are within control constraints.
  • Assigning budget responsibility to team managers and supporting them to do this well.
  • Developing future budgets annually with the Head of Finance and Operational Leadership. Ensuring that the process for doing this is completed in a timely way for review by CNE leadership team.
  • Ensuring that the current budget agreed is met and does not fall below the KPI set prior to the financial year commencing.
  • Taking appropriate action if the budget is falling below its agreed targets.
  • Working alongside Operational Leadership to ensure that our ambition to reach into a greater geography is met in line with our strategy.

Safeguarding:

With delegated responsibility from the Safeguarding Lead, you will ensure that the safeguarding policy and processes are followed across your portfolio of work.

You will liaise with the Safeguarding lead (Operations Director) on escalated and complex issues.

You will:

  • Ensuring safeguarding is given the highest priority, and that records maintained by staff in accordance with CNE policy are updated and maintained.
  • Sit on the strategic safeguarding board and meet quarterly to discuss safeguarding across the organisation.

Growth & Reach:

As part of your wider responsibilities you will be expected to work with Operational Leadership with a focus on growing your portfolio and reaching out across the North East and nationally to deliver our work in other areas.


You will be expected to:

  • Meet monthly with Operational Leadership to discuss and act on a pipeline of work
  • Work closely with the Income Generation Team to identify the most appropriate source of funding for the work within your portfolio, this may include seeking funding from: Grants, Tenders, Proposal, Sales.


You and your Team Managers will be expected to contribute to writing and drawing up the budget with the support of the Finance team.


Impact:

You will be responsible for ensuring that all impact data in relation to your portfolio of project is kept updated regularly and that your team is contributing to adding into this via our CiviCRM system.


You will be expected to:

  • Ensure all monitoring required by funders is completed on time and to task.
  • Provide quarterly reports with impact data to the Board of Trustees.
  • Provide an annual report of work within your portfolio.
  • Provide regular updates re stakeholder mapping, working with your team to update this information regularly.
  • You will be expected to work with the Policy Officer to inform them of challenges experienced by the people we work with, and to highlight areas of campaigning appropriate to your portfolio.
  • Ensure quality assurance process are established and monitored to ensure outstanding service delivery.
  • Take responsibility for effective termly planning across all services delivered within your portfolio.

Sustainability:

You will work with the Operational Leadership team to develop strategies for sustainability for the work within your portfolio.

You will also be required from time to time to investigate and explore new areas of work that are relevant within your portfolio.
