Opening in 1969, Volunteer Centre Kensington & Chelsea (VCKC) is the oldest Volunteer Centre in the country and each year it enables thousands of people to improve their lives and the lives of others.

The Volunteer Centre's Specialist Services team provides case work support to a range of people who experience barriers to volunteering and to sustaining independent living, including:

  • physical and learning-disabled people
- people with long term health conditions
- people with mental health support needs
- long term unemployed people
- people with criminal records

  • Supported Access


This project is specifically for young people in Kensington & Chelsea aged 16-25 who are disabled, learning disabled, have a long-term health condition, or are looking for mental health support.

We can help you find work or build towards it through CV writing and interview confidence building workshops, by matching you with a supportive employment or volunteering placements, and with ongoing support to help you get settled and make the most of your new role.


  • Community Connections


Connecting young people living in North Kensington aged 18-35 with community projects, organising volunteer taster days, and supporting their wellbeing through a range of workshops.


  • Stepping Stones


We provide support to adults living in Kensington and Chelsea who are disabled, learning disabled, or have a long-term health condition.

Along with a range of wellbeing workshops, we will find supportive volunteer placements that are accessible to each individual's needs.

All projects benefit from an ongoing range of Wellbeing workshops, including arts and crafts workshops, gardening, and play reading. We also run an English Conversation workshop, providing a welcoming safe space for people learning English.

Key Duties_


Under the direction of the Head of Specialist Services, you will contribute to the development and delivery of the Specialist Services Wellbeing Programme, enabling clients to set and achieve their goals, improve their wellbeing, and overcome barriers to independence and inclusion.

You will take responsibility for meeting targets and reporting progress against them.

1. Project Operation

  • Identify and engage prospective participants. Interview potential clients in accordance with programme guidelines, undertaking strengths-based assessment of client skills, knowledge, motivation and goals. Co-produce development plans with clients based on these assessments. Help to ensure other aspects of the programme are also appropriately client led, encouraging and supporting client participation in the design, delivery and review of the Wellbeing programme and other aspects of VCKC work.

Recruit, induct and oversee volunteers, including:

  • Buddies/mentors to assist clients' development, building their capacity towards volunteering placements and into sustained employment
  • Befriender volunteers, to support clients' social connectedness beyond formal programme activities
  • Programme support volunteers and office admin volunteers to assist with delivery
Ensure that volunteers are appropriately screened, backed by effective regular communication and accurate record keeping, supervised, trained and supported in their roles accordance with the Centre's policy on working with volunteers

  • Work with the Head of Specialist Services and colleagues from Core Services to develop the capacity and practice of organisations that involve volunteers to include people with additional support needs. Liaise with volunteer-involving organisations (VIOs) where clients are placed as volunteers to ensure that appropriate policies and systems for Health & Safety, Equal Opportunities and volunteer support and supervision are in place, in addition to any adjustments required for individual clients. Maintain contact with, and provide ongoing support to, participants and key staff at VIOs to ensure volunteers are supported effectively.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to the recruitment, induction, progress and outcomes of participants in order to facilitate accurate monitoring, reporting and evaluation. Ensure client records reflect up to date assessments of risks and support needs undertaken by VCKC and provided by referral organisations, and are stored in our systems such that they are both secure and accessible to anyone working with the relevant clients.
