Deputy Head of Midwifery and Neonates

An exciting opportunity has arisen at Tameside and Glossop to appoint a strong and inspirational midwifery leader as our next Deputy Head of Midwifery.

At TGH we deliver services across a wide geographical area. We provide woman centred, family friendly care and offer a range of models of midwifery and obstetric care provision through personalised care.

The Deputy Head of Midwifery is a senior managerial and clinical leadership post at TGH. The primary function is to support the Divisional Director of Midwifery and Nursing in providing a high level of professional support and advice to all staff working in the midwifery and neonatal services. This includes oversight of day to day operational function of services with safe and high quality care the priority. There will be a need to support the wider corporate professional agenda.

The post holder will be responsible for the development and application of systems, control processes and risk management arrangements that ensure full compliance with internal and external governance procedures and to benchmark against best practice requirements.

The post holder will work with the division to develop the strategic direction which maximises business efficiency, effectiveness, flexibility, and staff morale. They will support the development of a culture within the division which is open to and empowers innovation, creativity and learning.

Main duties of the job

Lead the development of midwifery practice and services by providing expert strategic and clinical leadership.

Support the Divisional Midwifery and Nursing Director (DMND) with the strategy for maternity services, setting standards and guidelines for midwifery practice in keeping with NMC, national policy documents and guidance, leading continuing research, and clinical development agenda for maternity services.

Represent midwifery at local and regional level, playing a key role in the integration of maternity service provision across Trust led services. Ensuring that the best possible woman/birthing person and family experience is delivered through high quality, person centred clinical practice. Interfacing with other staff to implement change and to support full integration of midwifery within multi-disciplinary and multi-agency teams.

Provide visible and up-to-date professional leadership to midwives. Ensure there are robust systems of clinical and professional governance, practice and professional development in place and develop accountability and assurance frameworks to secure high quality and sustainable services to patients.

In consultation with the DMND develop models of practice that are aligned to evidence-based practice, modernising midwifery and changes to maternity services.

Lead and manage efficient, professional and comprehensive complaints and legal responses, working with teams to set the standards and drive improvements across the Trust.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

Responsible for the first line management and leadership of the midwifery matrons. Along with the clinical and professional leadership of midwifery and nursing staff working across the service/site. Support the achievement of all the site based key performance targets and work in liaison with other sites to share best practice. Participation and leadership in the development of clinical pathways in maternity to ensure that clinical outcomes and women and families experiences continually improve. To implement and monitor the Trust Infection prevention and control strategy within maternity. To implement and monitor the quality agenda in relation to formal service user feedback, including complaints, Serious Incidents, and Friends and Family Feedback. To monitor antenatal and newborn screening standards, providing leadership to the matrons to ensure all areas are meeting the standards. To support the DMND in the review and implementation of national key quality drivers such as NHS long term plan, Maternity Incentive Scheme, Ockenden review and the Three year delivery plan for maternity and neonatal services. To support the development of a midwifery team that continually strives to improve quality. Person Specification
