Job overview

This is a Trust Doctor (Registrar Level) .The Trust is committed to supporting the post holder in developing their career within Obstetrics and Gynaecology. This is a 1.0 WTE vacancy on a Substantive appointment.

The post will be based at Newham University Hospital and while this is a non-training post, the successful candidate will work across the full range of specialist clinics and theatres and will be invited to take part in all the educational opportunities the department has to offer. There may be an opportunity to develop specialist interests including completion of ATSMs if eligible.

Successful candidates will be encouraged to participate in teaching, research, audit and journal club. In line with our commitment to improving the working lives of our junior doctors, the duties and hours are fully compliant with the New Deal initiative.

Individuals will require full GMC Registration and should be post MRCOG part 1. These posts are aimed at UK or Overseas trainee obstetricians at ST 3+ level or above, and for EU trained individuals with the appropriate level of clinical experience. The successful applicant would join a middle grade rota.

Main duties of the job

The Registrar will have duties will be similar to Specialist Registrar year ST3-ST6 working under the guidance of the obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant.

The postholder will be covering a variable range of duties in both Obstetrics and Gynaecology. These include acute obstetric cover, acute gynaecology cover, obstetric and gynaecology ward rounds, ward cover, elective obstetric theatre and gynaecology theatre, elective antenatal and gynaecology clinics, and Maternity triage/ Maternity Assessment Unit. Presence in the hospital is required for all shifts.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The rolling rota will be provided prior to commencement of the post. A weekly rota is sent out each Friday, detailing daily duties.

The postholder is expected to attend and manage patients in the antenatal and gynaecology outpatient clinic. They are expected to attend operating lists, and manage the patients post operatively under the indirect guidance of the consultant. They should be independent in performimg caesarean section, instrumental delivery and surgical management of miscarriage.

Consultant cover is on-site between Between , the consultant covering is off-site. As such, the candidate would be expected to manage for all routine maternity cases and emergencies overnight and understand when to call for consultant assistance in timely manner. The postholder should

The College Tutor for Obstetrics & Gynaecology is currently Ms Saira Sundar, who is available to trainees for educational and careers advice. The postholder will be assigned an educational and clinical supervisor and will be appraised at 4 monthly intervals, and is required to engage with the Barts Health appraisal system – PReP.

Training:

This post is not part of the Deanery Training scheme, however regular sessions for continuing professional development are provided.

Attendance is expected at daily departmental teaching unless scheduled for acute duties).

As per the teaching rota,doctors are expected to present cases for local learning at Risk Management meetings. Doctors are also required to attend PROMPT obstetric simulation training, and a CTG/ Human Factors training day during their rotation.

Deanery trainees, non-training post junior doctors and Medical students are placed within the department, and all staff are expected to support their training.

Leave

All leave should be requested with 6 weeks' notice, on Health Roster and by emailing the Rota coordinator.

Conditions

All doctors should be aware of current local recommendations regarding vaccination and are requested to have hepatitis vaccinations available via the Occupational Health Department at Newham University Hospital.

Termination of pregnancy is carried out within the unit; however, no staff member is compelled to directly participate in the administration of a procedure which results in the termination of a pregnancy if they have a conscientious objection, except in the case of emergency care (when all doctors must provide care/ act in the best interest of a patient).

There is no statutory right to conscientious objection in the case of emergency hormonal contraception as this is not an abortifacient, but concerns should be discussed with the supervising consultant.

Maintaining medical excellence

The Trust wishes to encourage a culture of openness and medical excellence. The Trust requires all medical staff to maintain and demonstrate a good standard of medical practice. The appointees must be familiar with the General Medical Council's recommendations for preventing and managing poor practice as described in 'Maintaining Good Medical Practice'. The appointees must also be familiar with the Trust's recommendations and policies on reporting adverse events and poor clinical practice.

The post holders will treat all information that they handle with tact and discretion. No knowledge of a confidential or patient related nature will be passed on to any person that is not a Trust member of staff authorised to have such information.

Data Protection
The post holders will if required to do so, obtain, process and/or use information held on a computer or word processor in a fair and lawful way. Data will only be held for the specified registered purpose and data will not be disclosed to any unauthorised persons or organisations.

Staff must not do anything to compromise the health and safety of either their colleagues or themselves. Staff should also be aware of the responsibilities placed on them by legislation to ensure agreed safety procedures are carried out. This will help to maintain a safe workplace for all.
