Job Overview

We are seeking a motivated junior doctor to become part of our vibrant team dedicated to delivering inpatient general internal medicine and gastroenterology/hepatology services. This full-time position is tailored for doctors at the ST3+/senior SHO/registrar level, providing a developmental opportunity prior to advancing to a higher specialty physician training role. Candidates should have completed internal medicine training (IMT) or its equivalent, ensuring they are well-prepared for the responsibilities of this role.

Main Responsibilities

The successful candidate will play a vital role in the acute General Medical service. Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in the general medical on-call rota.
  • Managing gastroenterology and hepatology inpatients.
  • Overseeing general medical inpatients aged under 75, working closely with the gastroenterology team.
  • Collaborating with a supportive team of consultants and junior doctors.
  • Engaging in a 24-hour, 7-day emergency consultant-led endoscopy service.

Detailed Job Description and Main Duties

The main duties and responsibilities include:

  • Clerking patients during daytime, weekends, and nights as part of the on-call team.
  • Leading or participating in daily ward rounds.
  • Identifying and managing clinical issues effectively.
  • Prescribing medications safely.
  • Maintaining accurate and relevant medical records.
  • Managing time and clinical priorities efficiently.
  • Communicating effectively with patients, families, and colleagues.
  • Utilizing evidence, guidelines, and audits to enhance patient care.
  • Acting professionally at all times.
  • Addressing ethical and legal issues in patient management.
  • Educating patients on their conditions.
  • Engaging in lifelong learning and teaching.
  • Participating in the cardiac arrest team when on-call.
  • Attending a consultant-supervised gastroenterology outpatient clinic weekly.
  • Participating in a consultant/nurse endoscopist supervised endoscopy list weekly if desired.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential Criteria

  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • Full GMC Registration.
  • A minimum of 3 years post-qualification experience.
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent.
  • ALS certification.

Desirable Criteria

  • Intercalated BSc or equivalent.
  • Higher degrees such as MSc, PhD, or MD.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential Criteria

  • Medical knowledge appropriate for the grade.
  • Experience in teaching and education.
  • Prior experience at registrar or senior SHO/IMT1-2 level in the UK.
  • Experience working as a doctor in the NHS.

Desirable Criteria

  • At least 4 months of experience in gastroenterology or hepatology at ST level or equivalent.
  • Experience with upper/lower GI endoscopy.
