Manchester City Council's HM Coroner's Service are looking to recruit a Senior Coroner's Officer on an initial 6 month contract.


Location:
Manchester City Centre, fully office based

Hours: 35 per week.

08:30-16:30 Monday to Friday

Contract:
Initial 6 month contract with potential extension

The Role


We are an independent judicial office charged with investigating all unnatural deaths and deaths that occur whilst in state detention.

Manchester City Council is our funding authority, who are also responsible for all non-judicial officers.


The role of a senior officer is gathering evidence on behalf of the coroner by issuing Direction or Court Orders.

Each request must be diarised and proactively managed to ensure timely submissions.

The building of an inquest file which must contain evidencewhich explains the death, or evidence that will need testing before a court.


Duties Include

  • Process cases through to the inquest stage to include all statutory notifications and Coroner's instructions. Retain individual management of investigations ensuring timely submission of reports and evidence.
  • Attend court in an advocacy role to present inquests held pursuant of Rule 23 of the Coroner's (Investigation) Regulations 201
  • Check and approve post mortem authorities completed by Coroner's Business Support Officers before submission to the mortuary.
  • Review case files completed by Coroner's Business Support Officers when progressing cases from natural to suspicious.

  • Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology
  • Knowledge and understanding of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 and Coroners(Investigations) Regulations 201
  • The role holder will deal with traumatic and upsetting situations and circumstances and will therefore need to show emotional resilience in dealing with these issues and an ability to respond positively to the customer on a day to day basis.
