You will be required to attend the scenes of unexpected and unnatural deaths with Senior Police Colleagues, gathering information and evidence for HM Coroner. You will be responsible for obtaining detailed and accurate witness statements from bereaved relatives, eye witnesses, professionals and expert witnesses. You will ensure that all exhibits including CCTV, Body Worn Video and other digital data relevant to the Coronial investigation is obtained and available for HM Coroner to assess admissibility. You will be responsible for compiling and submitting the file of evidence to HM Coroner for Inquest proceedings.

As part of the investigation process, you will be required to use digital cameras to record and process evidence in accordance with GMP Policy. You will be required to attend Coroners Court and as a representative of GMP you will give oral evidence under oath at Inquest proceedings.

You will be required to attend the public mortuary, to deal with queries raised by pathologists and mortuary technicians regarding for example concerns around the identification of the deceased or the discovery of injuries not previously recorded.

Police Coroner’s Officers are responsible for the reporting of all unexpected deaths, where the Police have attended to HM Coroner and you will have responsibility for ensuring that the Identification of the deceased is to HM Coroners requirements in all cases. You will also have to manage a work stream generated by HM Coroners in relation to unnatural deaths that occur in hospital / health care settings.

You will be collaborative and have the skills to work in partnership with internal and external Police colleagues and agencies such as social services, care homes and funeral directors.

Further responsibilities include administering the GMP system for reporting deaths, dealing with correspondence and queries, preparing and submitting reports and statistics.

The role will require you to have knowledge of relevant Coronial legislation and the policy and procedures relating to the reporting and investigation of coronial deaths.

This role isn’t for everyone, it is important that you have strong emotional resilience, you will be dealing with death on a daily basis and you will be physically exposed to a number of unpleasant situations involving death when attending scenes. Your empathy, manner and approach to the role is important as this will leave a lasting impact on the families and friends of the deceased.

This role requires you to be a team player working in the dynamics of a small team but there will be occasions when you will be expected to work alone with minimum supervision.

You’ll need to have the flexibility to work across different GMP locations, so it’s essential that you have a full driving licence and access to a vehicle for business purposes.

On occasion, you may also be required to work outside of normal working hours.

As a condition of being appointed you will be required to provide a DNA.
