We are looking for highly motivated, registered health and care professionals to support our senior clinical leaders to deliver on workforce priorities at a regional level.

The scheme is ideal for clinicians who are interested in developing their leadership, strategic, communication and project management skills.


This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development and delivery of workforce policy and gain experience of working at a system level.

You will be part of a cohort of Clinical Fellows from a variety of professional backgrounds.

The part-time nature of the post will enable you to continue your clinical practice and put your newfound skills and understanding to use straight away.

You will need to secure support from your substantive employer to release you for the duration of the secondment and to work with us to support your development in a tripart arrangement.


You need be able to evidence existing managerial experience, the ability to lead, empower and motivate others, and knowledge of NHS policies.

Successful delivery is dependent on the ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders. You will be self-motivated and able to work within ambiguity in an uncertain landscape.


As part of your secondment you will have protected learning time to enable you to undertake a recognised development programme such as the Leadership Academy's Foundations of system leadership, programme.

You will also be able to undertake a project management coach and work with a formal coach/mentor.

You will be expected to lead on a discreet workforce project across the region and share the outcomes from your work with key stakeholders at the end of the year.

Post secondment, you will have the opportunity to be part of an NHS England Clinical Fellows Alumni for 12 months to support you with continued career development.

The post is offered as a secondment opportunity for a period of 12 months on a part-time basis.

The post is offered as a hybrid arrangement, there is an expectation that you will work from a NHSE North West office base at least one day per week with the remainder of the time working from home.

Applicants will commence at the bottom of Band 8a with a full-time starting salary of £50,952.

Colleagues with a contractual office base are expected to spend, on average, at least 40% of their time working in-person.


The Health & Justice nursing workforce has specific challenges in terms of recruitment and retention of its healthcare workforce, partly due to the challenges associated with the unique environment and partly due to a lack of visibility of the setting as a career option for pre-registration learners.


Your role will be to explore how learning opportunities in prison healthcare can be maximised, to support recruitment and retention of the current workforce and also support delivery of the long-term workforce plan ambitions by meeting the need for increased capacity of learners across a variety of professions & fields of nursing, especially in adult, mental health and learning disability nursing, looking at innovative placement opportunities including digital clinical placements.


You will also explore the issues and challenges of this workforce to enable you to action plan and support initiatives to improve retention of the current health & justice healthcare nursing workforce.

You will also contribute to the development of a career pathway and educational pathway for those working in these settings, from unregistered support roles through to healthcare professional roles and beyond, via the apprenticeship route.
