Tate are working with a local authority within Bristol to recruit a School Improvement Officer on a contract basis paying £240 per day

Purpose of the job

To support the effective delivery of the Local Authority's duty in relation to provision in maintained schools by working with headteachers, principals, and leadership teams.

To contribute to the co-ordination of sector-led and school-to-school support in school improvement work and to the strategic development and evaluation of Local Authority school improvement strategies, focusing on city-wide priorities.

Key job details

  • Evaluate the quality and impact of the Local Authority's duty in relation to provision in LA maintained schools through scrutiny of school improvement strategies, school improvement plans, progress and outcomes data, and curriculum delivery to children and young people.
  • To work closely with the LA Early Years Improvement Officer, Early Years Teaching School and lead teachers in providing support to schools and education, particularly in relation to transition into primary settings.
  • Identify and promote good practice and provision so that, where necessary, improvements are accelerated, secured in schools across the school system in both the primary and secondary sectors.
  • Contribute to the development, planning and evaluation of LA strategies for improving outcomes for children and young people.
  • Identify and provide support to the Lead for School Partnerships in order to help secure, co-ordinate and monitor the delivery of high quality LA and school-to-school support through the progress review cycle for schools building capacity, causing concern and/or in an Ofsted category.
  • Maintain an overview of school performance (using a range of school data, including school self-evaluation and pupil performance data) and contribute relevant information, data and intelligence on areas of the LAs statutory responsibilities as required.
  • Report, as required, to senior officers on the impact of commissioned school improvement strategies and sector-led and school-to-school support strategies.
  • To work with the Lead for School Partnerships in supporting LA maintained schools that are judged inadequate by working closely with school leaders on the post inspection requirements in relation to SEND provision, including clear identification and prioritisation of points for the LA Statement of Action.
  • To work with all local and regional Teaching Schools Hubs and Alliances, local partners and national bodies to deliver an effective and comprehensive network of school to school support in relation to best practice and development.
  • Keep up-to-date with national legislation, initiatives and education research findings on evidence based school improvement strategies.

About you

  • Degree and qualified teacher status
  • Successful senior leadership experience at primary phase (e.g. Headteacher, Deputy Head, Assistant Head) or in a Local Authority at school improvement level (e.g. advisor/consultant).
  • Up to date knowledge of recent national developments in school legislation and the implications of these for school improvement and school effectiveness with experience of providing advice and consultancy in a system leadership role (e.g. LA advisor/consultant, NLE, LLE or SLE).
  • Thorough understanding of the Ofsted inspection framework and experience of leading a school through a recent successful inspection; whole school strategic planning; managing performance and evaluating educational provision; with specific expertise and experience in curriculum design, teaching and learning, pedagogy, etc.
  • Good understanding of the current role of Local Authorities and their role in developing system leadership and effective school to school support.
  • A thorough understanding of school data and how this can be used to evaluate, scrutinise and improve performance
  • Ability to lead and manage teams, work in partnership to promote collaborative working and to deal sensitively with people.
  • Ability to provide high quality constructive feedback using expertise and experience to scrutinise and influence others in relation to school improvement issues.
  • Good communication skills with different audiences and the ability to converse with citizens and provide complex information in accurate spoken English, or through a BSL interpreter and a resilience, tenacity and ability to work to tight deadlines, often in difficult circumstances.
  • Ability to act with demonstrable fairness, integrity and consistency.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge and/or experience of equalities and diversity issues.
