Job Title: Elderly Care Nurse Specialist

The job involves closely working with the Geriatrician in the Older Person Assessment Unit (OPAU) clinic at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust. You will rotate between Continence Advisory Service clinics in Lambeth & Southwark, providing expert advice on bladder and bowel issues for in-patients and out-patients. Your role will also include collaborating with Home delivery services, supporting Primary Health Care Teams, and contributing to the clinical governance framework.

  • Main Duties of the Job:

The Elderly Care Nurse Specialist will conduct high-quality continence advice clinics, manage a caseload of patients with complex bladder and/or bowel problems, and ensure rapid response to bladder and bowel issues on the wards. This role will involve contributing to the development of clinical practice, research, and standards of care within the service, while maintaining a person-centered care approach.

Job Responsibilities

  • To be professionally and legally responsible for all aspects of the post-holder's work.
  • Assess patients autonomously, determine care plans, and coordinate interventions.
  • Manage clinical risk and provide specialist assessment and interventions.

  • Supervise junior staff/students, flexibly plan patient caseload and meetings, and provide leadership within the team.
  • Organize team meetings, communicate effectively, and adhere to HR policies.

Communication

  • Motivate and persuade others through effective communication, maintain close links between staff, and exchange ideas.

Information Management

  • Maintain accurate record-keeping systems and supervise other nurses' record-keeping.

Education & Professional Development

  • Act as a mentor to students, stay updated on clinical developments, and participate in education and training programmes.
  • Contribute to research and audit projects, utilize research findings in patient care, and monitor quality standards.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience.

Desirable

  • Physical assessment course.

Skills/Knowledge/Ability

Essential

  • Skills in specialty including rectal examinations.

Desirable

  • Undertaken clinical & nursing research.

Previous Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working autonomously and delivering effective patient focused care.

Desirable

  • Experience of audit, research & evidence-based care.
