Raby Estates are about to launch an unrivalled development scheme, providing superb visitor facilities within the heritage setting of Raby Castle, along with a magnificent rejuvenation of the beautiful Walled Gardens.

We have two exciting horticultural opportunities available, one for a plantsperson gardener with a passion for plants and an estate gardener with a good countryside and machinery skill set.

As a gardener, you will be playing a vital role in ensuring our gardens are a wonderful place to visit and spend time.

You will be part of a team of gardeners caring for and working on the new Rising project and existing areas of the Raby estate.

The core of your work will be focused at Raby Castle, within the newly landscaped areas of the Rising project, though at times your help will be needed within the peripheral areas of the estate.


Background

These horticultural roles are being created to meet the demands of the redesigned Walled Gardens and the freshly landscaped surrounding areas, created as part of the Rising development.

These brand-new positions, offer a unique opportunity for you to shape and craft your career within this progressive and ambitious department.

The launch of The Rising development at Raby Castle will open up this spectacular location to a new range of audiences and you will be responsible for showcasing the gardens in the best possible way, sharing knowledge and passion with visitors and in turn, delivering commercial success for the estate.

We are ideally looking for individuals with relevant qualifications, but those with a plethora of hands-on experience are also welcome to apply.

PA1 and PA6 spraying certificates would be advantageous and previous time working within an establishment open to the public and alongside volunteers would be beneficial.

You should be enthusiastic, be effective and efficient when working on your own or as part of the wider team.

Depending on your skills and interests, we are happy to organise additional training to enable you to work at the highest standard possible.

What you will be doing
As a Plantsperson gardener and an estate gardener, you will:

  • Ensure all Health and Safety procedures are adhered to
  • Maintain a high standard of care and cleanliness to the areas and jobs assigned to yourself.
  • Generally, be working on weeding, pruning, hedge cutting, grass cutting and strimming.
  • Be using rideon mowers and handheld machinery, so a good proficiency is expected.
  • Be required to carry out other reasonable duties as required.

What to expect

  • You will work in a public facing position; therefore you must be confident and courteous in dealing with visitors and equipped to share information about the estate with them.
  • You will be expected to be presentable at all times, utilising estate workwear and PPE where required.
  • The ability to work flexible hours is a must. Raby is at its busiest during weekends and holiday periods therefore a flexible shift pattern will be required.
  • You will need a full, clean driving licence.

You will need to have

  • Relevant horticultural qualifications and/or experience on the job
  • Written and verbal communication skills

  • The ability to multitask and prioritise your workload
  • The ability to motivate yourself and set your own goals
  • A flexible approach to work with the ability to adapt to a fastpaced, everchanging environment
