The ACCP is a nationally recognised role and these posts offer an exciting opportunity for senior professionals with Critical Care experience to develop their skills further, to perform advanced clinical skills.

This post forms part of the medical team rota.


The post holder is expected to work competently within a framework for ACCP's, whilst being aware of their own limitations.

To perform clinical and physiological assessment of critically ill patients requiring Critical Care intervention or opinion Trust-wide.

To act as a non-medical prescriber.

To evaluate and/ or collect information from the physiological assessment, patient history, diagnostic data and identify relevant problems.

Use appropriate clinical decision making to initiate appropriate management/ treatment; be that physical, pharmacological or logístical in nature.

To assess and retrieve patients requiring Critical Care from any area within the trust.


Facilitate admission to and discharge from the Critical Care Unit, by liaising with the registrar and/or consultant and nurse in charge of the unit.

Communicate effectively with the nursing and medical team within Critical Care.

To assist with, plan and deliver formal and informal education to Critical Care staff where required.

Engage with service improvement projects, audit and research

This advanced role will provide expert clinical care to patients requiring level 1-3 care. This in the main will be provided in Critical Care but also patients requiring Critical Care intervention Trust wide.

The role involves successfully completing the Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) Advanced Critical Care Practitioner (ACCP) and with extensive training in line with the National Competency Framework for ACCP's.


Assist in the evolution of appropriate equipment provision within the unit, liaising with the Critical Care Procurement and Equipment Team (PET) where appropriate.


Engage in regular evaluation of teaching activity and act on feedback to ensure the delivery is appropriate to service needs.

To work closely with the junior and senior doctors, lead clinician and matron to offer continuity of car

Work closely with both the medical and nursing staff to bridge the gap between the medical and nursing teams.

Report incidents and near misses in a timely and responsive manner.


Participate in the tripod line management model (ACCP, matron and lead clinician), utilising the CPD and appraisal pathway from the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, and incorporating the Trust values and behaviours.

To undertake continuous professional development and maintain Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration annually and revalidation triennially.
