The postholder will provide policy, admin and communications support to Labour councillors to aid them in carrying out their functions as members of the Council.

You should be someone who can make things happen with a problem-solving attitude and strong attention to detail.


You should have experience of working in a political environment, be flexible both in working methods and hours, and have a friendly and positive manner.


If you have excellent communication skills, imagination, are able to build good relationships with a variety of people, take the initiative and work as part of a team, we want to hear from you.


This is an exciting role in a busy and dynamic office at the heart of one of the country's highest profiles and most forward-thinking councils.

You will be supporting the majority group to take forward their objectives and will be working closely with councillors, supporting the Leader and Executive to make effective decisions.


  • To carry out administrative duties to ensure that efficient and timely support is provided to the Labour Group, Executive, Leader and the Labour Group Office.
  • To support Labour Group members in their duties as elected members, including assisting with pursuing casework and local priorities.
  • To prepare and distribute relevant information to Labour councillors through a weekly enewsletter.
  • To coordinate and support Labour councillors in their role as community champions, including with the planning and delivery of local community campaigns.
  • To prepare research and other briefing materials for Labour councillors.
  • To plan and manage internal Labour Group policy development and scrutiny meetings, and to carry out followup work.
  • To prepare and distribute materials for key Council and Labour Group meetings.
  • To attend meetings of the Labour Group and other meetings of the Council, and carry out preparatory and followup work (including a record of the meeting) as appropriate.
  • To attend events and meetings with the Leader, Executive Members and Labour councillors, providing support as required.
  • To maintain accurate databases of key contacts, information and external briefing materials.
  • To provide specific support to the Leader of the Labour Group as required.
  • To assist in communication and coordination between members of the Labour Group.
  • To organise Group events, such as 'away days', together with the Labour Group Office.
  • To play a full role in the Labour Group Office, including setting a programme for work, and achieving personal targets, including appraisal targets, as agreed with the Head of the Labour Group Office.
  • To proactively develop knowledge and understanding of the Council, including its services and decisionmaking processes.
  • To proactively maintain a detailed knowledge of current affairs, particularly in relation to local government and the Labour Party.
  • To undertake regular evening work and occasional work on weekends, when given appropriate notice.
  • To undertake training and constructively take part in meetings, supervision, seminars and other events designed to improve communications and assist with the effective development of the post and the post holder.
  • Ensure that duties are undertaken with due regard and compliance with the Data Protection Act and other legislation.
  • Carry out duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Council's Health and Safety Policy and relevant Health and Safety legislation.
  • At all times carrying out responsibilities/duties within the framework of the Council's Dignity for all Policy. (Equal Opportunities Policy).
  • To undertake other duties commensurate to the grade of the post.
