The role


The Head of Music and Performing Arts will lead the music and performance provision throughout the Junior School, from Reception to Year 6, primarily teaching music, alongside some drama and overseeing extra-curricular activities and performances, ensuring the delivery of an ambitious curriculum, which is reflective of the school values.

They are accountable to the Head of the Junior School via delegated shared line management to the Director of Music (Senior School) and Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning.


The head of music and performing arts will further the vision for music and performance in the Junior School which promotes a love of music and drama for all, a platform for those with particular interest and ability to thrive, and an awareness and enjoyment of a wide range of artistic form, tradition, culture, and style.


Strategic school aims and objectives

  • Lead and inspire the highest standards of music and performance across all areas of school life
  • Lead on the development, delivery and review of the music and drama curriculum, focusing on the delivery of high quality music teaching from Reception to Year
  • Line manage the performing arts teacher, working collaboratively to deliver the key curriculum aims
  • Plan and coordinate whole school, phase, year group and smaller group performances, concerts and recitals.
  • Responsible for music in assemblies (whole school and phase): accompaniment, listening, singing and giving pupils a platform for performance
  • Play and a full and active part in the extracurricular life of the school, including leading choirs, junior orchestra, wind band and other ensembles as appropriate
  • To establish a close relationship with visiting music teachers and inform them of visits and activities that may change their schedule

Teaching and Learning

  • Establish and develop a relationship with each individual in each class, ensuring their social, emotional, spiritual and moral well being
  • Work with other teachers in the Junior School to establish, develop and implement short medium term plans for the music and drama throughout the Junior School
  • Maintain a balance between curriculum delivery and performance
  • Work closely with the Director of Music and the Head of Drama in the Senior School, and the Head of PE in the Junior School, on mutual curriculum aims and shared aspects of extracurricular music, drama and dance
  • Work collaboratively with the Haberdashers' Boys' Prep School and the Girls' Senior School ensuring the curriculum provision is reflective of the schools' shared vision
  • Work closely with the visiting music staff on ensembles, shared projects and performances
  • Monitor, evaluate and review the effect of policies and plans, establishing clear targets for improving and sustaining pupil development
  • Establish, maintain and develop appropriate resources for teaching and learning, including ICT
  • Create a stimulating and exciting atmosphere in the performing arts studio
  • Prepare the studio prior to the beginning of term and clear it appropriately at the end of term
  • Contribute to whole school curricular review and development and to a shared vision for the school through staff meetings
  • Share in the cover for absent colleagues

Assessment and Reporting

  • To monitor, evaluate and review progress and achievement of all pupils, through the assessment, recording and updating systems, identifying clear targets for improvement.
  • To establish and maintain a good rapport with parents by communicating fully, accurately and positively with them both informally and formally through parents' evenings and written reports
  • Attend or lead Induction and Curriculum events to maintain communication between home and school
  • Liaise with members of the Extended Leadership Team of the Junior School and ensure they are always kept well informed

  • Attend INSET courses as required, attend staff meetings, contribute to whole School curricular review and development and to a shared vision for the School
