Role Purpose

  • The deputy head of Audience is a new role to help in the management of our growing Audience function. The role will support the Head of Audience in managing rosters, as well as ensuring our stories are delivered to the right audience, at the right time, on the right platform to drive audience growth.
  • You will have multiple premium and freetoaccess stories a day to distribute via the home page, app, newsletters, section pages and social media to ensure they reach the largest audience possible. You will have excellent news judgment, a deep understanding of how online readers consume news and be adept at using data to inform your decisions.

Role Responsibilities (Overview)

  • Manage the digital output and distribute our premium and free stories to reach the widest possible audience
  • Curate a compelling homepage and app feed that reflect the full breadth of stories on
  • Deputise for the Head of Audience in general management duties
  • Write, manage and send newsletters and push notifications, using open and clickthrough rates to constantly improve engagement
  • Create engaging social media posts that generate reach and engagement and drive readers to our stories
  • Curate section pages so that they engage our more niche audiences
  • Use realtime and historical data to continuously optimise our readers' experience and increase engagement
  • Help liaise with your counterparts in the Mediahuis group to gain and share insights on building audiences
  • Keep an eye on top stories to ensure they have the best headline, pictures, videos and are presented in the best possible way
  • Work closely with editors and the newsdesk on strategies to ensure stories create the biggest impact
  • Help with the planning process to ensure the Audience Team can prepare priority coverage to get the maximum impact
  • Take part in the development and delivery of special editorial campaigns, initiatives and projects
  • Develop, adopt and champion best practices for maximising audience engagement across the newsroom, including training

Experience & Qualifications (Minimum Experience & Essential Knowledge)

  • At least 4 year's editorial experience working in a digital media environment
  • Experience of digital publishing and distribution, including content management systems and analytics dashboards
  • A recognised journalism qualification, ideally from an NCTJapproved course
  • Strong knowledge of social media and SEO best practices
  • Strong legal and ethical knowledge, including the Editors' Code of Practice, Northern Ireland and UK media laws, covering libel, contempt, privacy, data protection, copyright issues, etc.
