The British Red Cross has embarked on an ambitious and complex organisation-wide transformation portfolio to build a sustainable organisation capable of delivering our Strategy 2030 in an increasingly challenging operating environment.


As Senior Change Lead you will lead the change management function of the organisation to deliver people-centred change across the portfolio of transformation programmes.

Working directly with the Executive, Senior Directors and Programme Directors you will support and influence them to lead the transformation and provide assurance that change is landing successfully, through the development and delivery of change plans.


Responsibilities include:


You will be responsible for leading a team of Change Managers and ensuring the people side of transformation is considered throughout.

Working alongside Executive Directors, business leads and sponsors, programme/project managers, and where appropriate other specialists (e.g. internal engagement, HR, L&OD), they will own the organisation's change management strategy and develop and deliver people-centred change management approaches that facilitate line-led change and enable those impacted to understand, embrace, adopt and sustain the change.


You will understand the impact of change upon the organisation, looking across the transformation portfolio together with existing and new change initiatives.

You will track and manage the impact of change by advising on the sensible sequencing of change activity which is mindful of seasonal or unexpected pressure on teams.

You will manage portfolio level change management activities in line with the agreed change strategy.

This will include targeted support to directorates or teams when they experience high impact change and being a checkpoint to assure the organisation that change has been delivered successfully.


You will review the way change is managed with the Senior Leadership Team, in terms of how the transformation portfolio and other change initiatives engage with SLT, and how changes are communicated and understood.

This will include tracking and disseminating the successes we have achieved through the changes we are making.

Duties include:

  • Directly line manage a team of (currently 5) Level 4 Change Managers to deliver a people centred approach to transformation that is flexible to the differing needs and complexities of the transformation, ensuring the teams expertise is allocated where it can add the most value. They will require coaching to develop their skillsets and handle stakeholders in complex change programmes.
  • Lead on a number of areas of portfolio level change activities, for example, the execution and evaluation of the change strategy, capability building of our change networks, maintaining an aggregate portfolio level view of the change, reporting to the Portfolio Board (Executive Leadership Team); developing business cases for change resource as required to peaks of change activity.
  • Advise, coach and support Change Managers, leaders, managers and programme/project management colleagues in all relevant aspects of change leadership and change management to enable a lineled approach to change. This will include ensuring the right balance between, practical handson support, and guidance, being delivered by the Change Management team.
  • In collaboration with other specialists as appropriate (e.g. internal engagement, HR, L&OD) translate high level strategies into structured change management plans ensuring alignment with the portfolio change strategy and integration with the portfolio plans.

  • Recognised change management and organisational development accreditation/qualification
  • Extensive experience of leading cross organisational change portfolios in large and complex organisations
  • Up to date technical knowledge of change management approaches, models and tools.
  • Extensive experience of developing and leading change management advice, coaching and support to colleagues, Csuite, and senior leaders and managers, with varying levels of change management experience, to enable a lineled approach to change.
  • Experience of engaging with senior stakeholders, including Executive teams, to surface and resolve sensitive issues related to the change and to overcome significant resistance to change.
