Salford, Salford, United Kingdom UK Civil Service Full time

Job Summary

The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) focuses on developing policy, negotiating trade agreements for the UK, and boosting UK trade and investment globally. This position offers a great chance to contribute to a crucial area of Government policy as the UK establishes its new independent trade policy post EU exit.

The role is within the Investment Policy team in the Trade Policy, Implementation and Negotiations Group. The Group oversees Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations that the UK has initiated with other countries and is responsible for policies related to FTAs, including trade in goods, services, and investment.

The Investment team shapes UK trade policy on investment, leads investment negotiations for FTAs, standalone investment agreements, and in international organizations like the World Trade Organization. The objective is to enhance rules and open markets for UK investors, aiding the growth of UK businesses.

This role is dynamic and engaging, with substantial exposure to Ministers, government officials, and international stakeholders, with a robust trade negotiation agenda.

This position is pivotal in helping shape negotiating positions for UK's investment chapter in FTA negotiations, participating in negotiation teams, and contributing to policy approaches. Collaboration with various stakeholders is key, including other Government departments, UK overseas Posts, business and legal communities, and officials from other governments and international bodies.

Job Description

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting preparation for negotiation of investment chapters in FTAs, working with Government departments, analysts, and external stakeholders to develop negotiating positions.
  • Maintaining an overview of the team's core policy and treaty text for investment liberalization treaty provisions, and providing advice to ensure consistency in negotiations.
  • Providing advice on Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) across Government and to senior management.
  • Leading briefing requests on investment treaty policy issues and responding to parliamentary questions.

This role involves no direct line management but may involve task management for team members in certain aspects of the role.

The team is dynamic, hardworking, and values diversity and personal growth. While a background in trade policy or international negotiations is beneficial, a strong commitment to learning is highly valued, with support provided to enhance trade expertise.

Occasional overseas travel may be required.
