Everyone's different and has their own perspective so we're building a diverse team that mirrors the communities we serve. Through this we're determined to be one of Wales' leading inclusive employers. We're creating an inclusive transport network that everyone in Wales can be proud of.

Who we are

At Transport for Wales, we're on a mission to transform transport in Wales and make it fit for the future, whether that's rail, bus, walking or cycling. We want to inspire a nation to change the way it travels, so that we all travel more sustainably and help to combat the climate emergency we're all facing.

We're an open and inclusive place to work, where everyone is welcome and our people are supported to reach their full potential.

We want to create an environment where our people can grow and succeed. This is key to enabling us to deliver on the promises we've made to the people of Wales to build a sustainable transport network that meets their needs.

Role responsibilities

We are seeking an experienced and progressive Occupational Health and Safety Manager to lead our health and safety programmes and objectives across our multimodal portfolio. The successful candidate will have a strong background in health and safety and in particular multi discipline organisations, a proven track record of effective management, and exceptional leadership skills.

This role requires the ability to influence and inspire teams, drive a strong safety culture, and implement a comprehensive safety plan across the organisation.

You will champion and embed a strong safety culture throughout the organisation by promoting best practices, continuous improvement, and a shared commitment to safety at all levels.

Mentoring and developing health and safety professionals will be a key part of your role, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge, and motivation to excel and add value. You will create a positive and inclusive environment that encourages professional growth and team cohesion. Additionally, you will develop and implement succession plans to ensure the continuity and sustainability of the health and safety function, identifying and nurturing future leaders within the team.

The role sits within the wider Safety, Sustainability and Risk Directorate, as part of this team you and your reports will have opportunities for cross functional working, collaboration and integrated projects. You will be part of the health and safety leadership team and therefore have an ability to influence and steer health and safety, building on your skills, capability and experience.

Responsible for working with the operational teams across the business as the Manager for a technical team giving advice and guidance and supporting the safe working and legal compliance across TfW. Developing and engaging through the team to deliver for holistic proactive health, safety and wellbeing programmes to create role model culture and behaviours. Identify opportunities to standardise programmes for health and safety management to be more efficient and effective, working with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to continuously improve TfW safety management systems, whilst maintaining legal and other compliance to Rail standards and safety authorisations and certificates.

Who we're looking for

Demonstrable experience of leading the effective development, delivery and review of Health and Safety strategies, plans and procedures. A member of the Institute of Safety and Occupational Health (IOSH). Skilled in managing and coordinating direct reports to deliver an efficient service.

Welsh Language Skills

The ability to speak/write Welsh would make a great addition to your application, but it is not essential for this role.

We fully support our people who want to improve their Welsh language skills, and personal development for Welsh Language skills are offered in a variety of ways such as online learning, classroom courses and funding attendance at local community courses.
