CONSULTANT POST IN CLINICAL GENETICS and GENOMIC MEDICINE

Applications are invited for a consultant post in Clinical Genetics and Genomic Medicine.

This exciting new 10PA post for the North East Thames Regional Genetics Service will be based in the Clinical Genetics Department at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). We are seeking a motivated clinician to join our supportive, dynamic and innovative department.

The successful candidate will join an experienced team in delivering high quality care for children with complex rare disease in both the outpatient and inpatient setting at GOSH. There will also be an expectation of supporting local paediatric units in East London. The patient population cared for by the service provides ample opportunity to pursue areas of specialist clinical interest.

The postholder will have a full clinical commitment and will play an active role in the department's programme of research and innovation, quality improvement, education and training. They will work closely with laboratory colleagues from the North Thames GLH who are co-located with the clinical department. The clinical service is a key partner in the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service Alliance (GMSA), also hosted by GOSH.

Main duties of the job

The post is non-resident and there are no on-call commitments.

The remit of the postholder will be to:

  • Deliver clinical genetics care in paediatric rare disease through clinics held at Great Ormond Street, peripherally and remotely. There may also be a requirement for review of paediatric inpatients at GOSH or a peripheral site.
  • Take a share of the weekday consultant rota to review referrals, including urgent prenatal referrals.
  • Support Genomic Medicine clinics for deep phenotyping of patients requiring clinical genetics input, feedback of results from genomic research studies, offer cascade testing and prenatal testing to parents and relatives where appropriate.
  • Offer clinical input to the interpretation of genomic variants and to provide clinical input to reports, liaising with clinicians from other specialties where appropriate.
  • Support genetics and genomics education across the Trust by teaching on courses, such as the QMUL Counselling in Genomic Medicine MSc module and other mainstreaming educational activities.
  • Play an active role in supporting research and development in the Clinical Genetics service.
  • Provide advice and supervision as appropriate for genetic counsellor-led clinics and contribute to the teaching of SpRs, genetic counsellors and other visitors allied to the department.
  • Take part in clinical genetics departmental activities including weekly clinical meetings, journal club, seminar series and audit.

Experience/Knowledge
  • Extensive experience in managing patients requiring Clinical Genetics assessment and management

  • Published research in peer reviewed journals in relevant area
