This 2 year fixed term Genomics Associate post is a new role created to enhance Genetic counselling services for families of Pakistani heritage and other underserved patient groups who may practice close relative marriage.

The purpose of the role is to provide additional input to services for this underserved group to improve access to genetics services and provide equitable opportunities for families to make informed reproductive decisions.

The Genomics Associate will be based in the Clinical Genetics Unit at Northwick Park Hospital and will work alongside clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors, and other colleagues to provide enhanced contact pre-and post
- clinic. This includes enhanced contact prior to and at the point of referral and after genetic testing and counselling to check understanding, expectations, language needs, questions and misconceptions. The Genomic Associate will also help to facilitate access to the service, particularly amongst marginalised communities and families who are difficult to engage.


The role is responsible for facilitating the collection of information, consent, samples and test results to enable genomic counselling and testing for patients with rare diseases and their family members.

Working within the clinical genetics department, the role will involve communicating with patients and their families directly by phone, video call and face to face to facilitate the diagnosis of decision making around genetic and genomic conditions.

Communication

  • Contact patients prior to clinic to verify referral information and to gather and provide basic preclinic information including ascertainment of language needs and appointment process and expectations to enhance attendance and uptake of genetics services.
  • Explaining what happens in a genetics appointment and address any misconceptions about genetic referral/appointment
  • Once patients/families have been seen by a genetic professional review understanding and if needed provide basic information about autosomal recessive and other modes of inheritance, within trained remit, to patients.
  • Preparing clinical data prior to a patient attending clinic. This involves prolonged period of concentration
  • Coordinating and supporting proactive cascade screening in families, under supervision.
Patient Care

  • Ensure equity of access to information and risk assessment by identifying extra support for patients whose English may not be their first language or who have a disability and may require additional support e.g. use of interpreters, involvement of learning disability nurse specialist.
  • Advocate for families and help them to access appropriate services
  • Telephoning families to request preclinic family and/or medical information, demographic information prior to appointment.
