Edinburgh, Edinburgh, United Kingdom UK Civil Service Full time

Job summary

On 12 November 2019, the Cabinet Secretary for Justice announced his intention to hold a Public Inquiry into the circumstances leading to and following the death of Sheku Bayoh in 2015. The Terms of Reference for the Inquiry were published on 21 May 2020.

The Public Inquiry is examining the circumstances leading up to the death of Mr Bayoh, the post incident management process and subsequent investigation into his death. The Inquiry will also establish the extent to which Mr Bayohs actual or perceived race played a part in events, if any.The Inquiry is reaching a crucial stage of completing evidential hearings and turning attention to preparation of the report.

We have four Fixed Term Appointment vacancies for Assistant Solicitors to join the Inquiry legal team.

The post-holders will require to take up the post in October 2024 for a duration of 12 months. The Inquiry must be, and be seen to be, independent and impartial to maintain the confidence of the public. We will not consider applications from anyone who has worked for the Crown Office, the PIRC or Police Scotland.

This post requires excellent attention to detail in analysing documentary evidence, oral evidence and statements and producing summaries and reports of that evidence for use by the Chair and counsel and ultimately in assisting in the production of the report.

It also requires flexibility and adaptability. You will be working in a small team and need to be willing to turn your hand to all tasks required to deliver the report.

It also requires strong interpersonal skills. The Inquiry legal team works flexibly across the Inquiry to ensure the efficient delivery of outcomes.

Please note that successful candidates will be required to obtain baseline security clearance from the Scottish Government prior to their appointment. Part of that process requires the obtaining of a basic disclosure certificate from Disclosure Scotland.

In return, the successful candidate will have the rare opportunity to support a high-profile Public Inquiry investigating an important aspect of the Scottish criminal justice system
