Senior Switchboard Operator

The Switchboard/Informatics Department are looking for a 22.5 hour per week Switchboard Operator. To join the existing team in providing a Telephony service across 3 main Hospital sites.


This is a challenging, interesting and rewarding post that would suit a flexible individual available to work a variety of shifts over a 7 day period and also at short notice to cover periods of absence, which may include working a night shift.


Ideally you should be experienced but consideration will be given to applicants who have the necessary aptitude and IT skills to undertake the role.

You should be computer literate and be confident working under pressure in a busy environment. You will need to demonstrate your ability to work to protocol and procedures. You will be self-motivated and have the ability to work on your own as well as a team player.

As one of the focal points a courteous helpful telephone manner and excellent communication skills are essential.


Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust (SWBT) is an integrated care organisation with a budget of approximately £600 million and over 7,000 staff.

  • To deal with all calls to and from the switchboard in a responsible courteous manner, giving assistance and advice when required in accordance with the service specification and operational policies.
  • To monitor progress of incoming calls, routing them to alternative destinations if the extension is engaged or not responding.
  • To develop an understanding of the Informatics Department functions, including working practices to assist with handling both caller and visitor enquiries effectively
  • To develop and have a thorough understanding of organisation's functionality, including medical terminology to ensure accurate connection and assistance to callers.
  • To maintain records relating to Emergency Incidents and test calls both manually and electronically.
