London, Greater London, United Kingdom Islington Council Full time
We are looking for an Assistant Director - Development Management.

This post has been created following a decision to separate the leadership of the council's Development Management and Building Control functions.

The postholder will be responsible for the delivery of the council's progressive planning policies by ensuring that effective and timely decisions are made on all the planning applications submitted to Islington Council.

You will also manage the Planning Enforcement and Design and Conservation Teams.

Islington Council is committed to enabling growth and development where the benefits of development are shared by all our residents.

With this aim in mind, our recently adopted Local Plan sets out our genuinely progressive planning policies.

These policies contribute to tackling inequality in our borough by delivering genuinely affordable homes and contributing to an inclusive economy.

These policies also support us in our work to tackle and mitigate climate change.

The Assistant Director - Development Management will work to ensure that the council's decisions on planning applications deliver our progressive planning policy priorities.

They will be committed to ensuring positive change and development whilst protecting Islington's historic buildings and places.

They should have a strong track record of leading successful development management teams and services to deliver great outcomes for local residents.

They should also be committed to improving our systems and processes and developing planning officers to deliver effective services to all our service users including local people.

Given our ambitions we believe that this is one of the most challenging but rewarding roles in development management in London.

The role provides a real opportunity to make a difference not only to Islington as a place but also to our local communities and businesses.

Islington is a place rich with diversity and culture.

To do this, everyone who works at Islington Council lives by a set of values which guide us in everything that we do:
collaborative, ambitious, resourceful, and empowering. They spell out 'CARE', which is what we think public service is all about.

Watch our video to hear more about our mission and how you can help us achieve it from the Leader of the Council, Cllr Kaya Comer-Schwartz.

It is the policy of Islington Council that no user of service, present or future employee or job applicant receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of their sex, perceived or actual sexual orientation, marital status, race, religion or belief, age, creed, colour, nationality, national origin, ethnic origin, or disability, or on the grounds of their association with someone in one of these groups; Islington Council operates a guaranteed interview scheme for candidates with disabilities who meet the minimum criteria and we are committed to providing support to applicants who request reasonable adjustments to be made during the recruitment process and throughout their career with us.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults, and expects all staff, and volunteers to share this commitment.

Priority will be given to those at risk of redundancy within Islington Council.
