The Department of Sociology are seeking a customer-focussed, open-minded, proven team-worker to join the department's student-facing administration team as a Student Support Administrator.


The Student Support Administrator will support all student-facing administration within the department but their primary role will be in providing support mainly for undergraduate administration, handling special cases for our students including leave of absence, exceptional circumstances affecting assessment, and those who require adjustments due to disabilities.

The postholder is expected to be collectively responsible for all aspects of the student related administration and activities from recruitment, induction through to graduation.

Other responsibilities may include the support of placement activity, admissions, student record keeping and visa compliance monitoring.

The applicant should be an open-minded and flexible individual, committed to professional development and continuous improvement. Able to demonstrate excellent IT skills and interpersonal skills to provide an outstanding student experience is important.

The applicant will be able to work as part of a team who are collectively committed to deliver effective and efficient services and support.


Working hours will be on a flexi-time basis, with the team covering the office between 9:00 - 5:00 between them.

You may be required to work occasionally at weekends to support admissions activity (approx. 4-5 days per year) and to work longer hours during peak workload times (e.g. during assessment hand-in periods) but in return we commit to providing a flexible role that will allow you to develop and grow.

Key responsibilities:

(Role holders will be required to undertake some or all of the duties below)

  • Provide excellent customer service to all stakeholders, answering general queries and resolving problems regarding a range of University processes and systems, with a particular focus on visiting students.
  • Provide efficient administration relating to ensuring effective communication is in place for students, academic and administrative staff using the most appropriate medium.
  • Support undergraduate student events to showcase the exciting teaching, learning and research that takes place in Sociology. This might include Open Days, Post Offer Visit Days, Graduation.
  • Contribute and take an active role with the updating, production and distribution of undergraduate handbooks and other relevant department/service documentation, including timetable, assessments and examinations; ensure the timely dissemination of information to support academics and graduate teaching assistants.
  • Support internships, casual workers and graduate teaching assistants using Dashboard and other administrative processes.
  • Efficiently manage administration processes relating to student information, such as timetabling, attendance monitoring, supervision set up, virtual learning environment(platform).
  • Undertake a range of administrative duties, making certain that controls are in place to ensure accuracy and timeliness, ensuring all information and data is managed in line with the relevant University policies.
